UEFA Conference League final 2026: Preview
In their 102-year history, Rayo have won nothing bar a handful of promotions. In fact, this UECL final is the first final they've reached in any competition. And they've got here under a rookie coach who should be long gone. Inigo Perez, then one of Andoni Iraola's assistants, was supposed to follow him to Bournemouth four years ago but wasn't granted a work permit. Instead, he was handed the reins when Iraola's replacement was fired.
To describe Iraola as a tough act to follow would be an understatement, but Perez already ranks alongside his great former mentor in the Vallecas pantheon. He'll be out on his own if Rayo secure the title on Wednesday.
There are parallels with Palace, who won their first major title 12 months ago, in their 119th year. Oliver Glasner is distinctly Iraola-esque in his talent for doing more with less by developing players in a clearly-defined system that suits them, and a year on from that momentous FA Cup triumph, the Austrian is on the verge of leading the club to a third piece of major silverware in his final act.
Palace took time to adjust to the European stage, their 10th-place finish in the league phase necessitating a playoff for a spot in the knockouts. However, a statement victory over Fiorentina has set them at ease. With nine goals, Ismaila Sarr is the Conference League's top-scorer, while Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta are being pursued by Europe's biggest clubs.
Rayo's journey to the final has been quieter, owing partly to the team as a whole sharing the goalscoring burden, which suits Perez just fine. With four goals, Alemao is El Matagigantes' top marksman in the competition, the Brazilian No.9 having been ably assisted by veteran midfielders Alvaro Garcia and Isi Palazon.
While this is Palace's first European final, Glasner won the Europa League with Frankfurt, and guided the Eagles to FA Cup and Community Shield glory by masterminding victories over Man City and Liverpool. Rayo have never contested a final of any sort before, but they've impressed in big games this season, holding Barcelona and Real Madrid to draws, and beating both Villarreal and Atletico. For both clubs, the UECL title is their only route back into Europe next season.
