So we’ve switched off our former incarnation (Tech.co.uk) and redirected the traffic over to this wonderful new site. As Nick says in his piece about the change, this site is still in the beta phase and so not everything works quite as it should yet. It does, however, already work far better than Tech.co.uk ever did, and we’ll be offering lots more functionality over the coming months.

The change reminded me to pass on thoughts about other sites that have had more than a lick of paint recently. The Guardian and BBC redesigns have provoked a lot of comment from the visiting public - one person branding the latter "another example of the relentless advance towards turning the Web into a Fisher-Price wonderland for simpletons".

The Guardian is gradually changing to a much more dynamic and involving site, while the BBC has redesigned its homepage and significantly relaunched its news and sport portals – largely to better accommodate iPlayer-style video content and better photography.

The BBC is also rolling out a new global navigation but didn’t finish it in time for the main launch. No matter, it thought, we’ll launch the site and simply add it on later. This, ladies and gentlemen, is indicative of our times – nothing is ever finished, even if it looks like it is.

The days of launching a whole new look that is completely done and dusted are behind us. Take a look at The Guardian’s football page, for example. The navigation is finished but the page hasn’t yet been touched by the new design.

Much of this is because a complete site redesign is simply too complex to roll out in a single go. For this site, for example, some elements are still being designed while others need tweaking.

Of course, the upshot for us - the browsing public - is that we simply have to deal with the fact that sites change, features come and features go, instead of defaulting to our first reaction of being overly critical. If the response to the Beeb’s redesign is anything to go by, it’s something we all need to work at.
