- Amazon has released the first trailer for its new pirate movie The Bluff
- The Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban-led film arrives in late February
- It's been co-developed by the Russo brothers' production company AGBO
Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for its forthcoming pirate flick The Bluff.
Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Citadel) and Karl Urban (The Boys), the swashbuckling, R-rated movie is due out on Amazon's streaming platform on February 25. Just over a month out from launch – at the time of writing, anyway – then, there's no better time for its official teaser to be released online.
Set midway through the 19th century, The Bluff sees Chopra Jonas portray Ercell 'Bloody Mary' Bodden, a former seafaring raider who, after escaping her violent past, has settled in the Caribbean with her husband TH (The Rings of Power's Ismael Cruz Cordova), her son Isaac (Vedanten Naidoo) and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Safia Oakley-Green).
However, when Connor (Urban), the notorious and menacing captain whom Ercell worked for, rocks up seeking revenge for spoiler-based reasons, Ercell is forced to put her dormant violence-based skills to the test once more to fight for the survival of her and her family. Cue what one of the world's best streaming services' PR team has called a "gritty, adrenaline-fueled action-adventure about family, survival, and the indomitable strength of a mother’s love."
Will the Russo brothers finally strike streaming service gold with The Bluff?
While it wasn't written or directed by Marvel stalwarts Joe and Anthony Russo, The Bluff has been developed alongside Amazon MGM Studios by the pair's production company AGBO.
Confirmation of the Russo brothers' involvement might be enough to send a shiver up some readers' spines. Indeed, very little criticism, if any, can be leveled at the siblings for their critically-acclaimed and money-spinning work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or their pre-Marvel Studios projects that includes beloved comedy shows Arrested Development and Community.
Nonetheless, there's no denying that such positivity has been harder to come by for films and shows they've worked on with world-leading streamers like Prime Video, Netflix, and Apple TV.
Sure, there have been notable hits. Despite mixed critical reviews, the Extraction movies and The Gray Man have been commercial hits for Netflix. Meanwhile, horror series From, a MGM+ project producer under the AGBO banner, has been lauded by critics despite struggling to break out in the same way as, say, Stranger Things did on Netflix.
There have been notable duds, too, though. Cherry, an original movie from Apple and AGBO, Prime Video's expensively assembled spy series Citadel, and Netflix's abject reimagining of cult classic graphic novel The Electric State involved the Russos to varying degrees.
If the Russo brothers have designs on breaking free of the 'they only make good Marvel movies' opinion that follows them everywhere they go, they need non-comic book projects like The Bluff to start succeeding on a more regular basis. Do so, and they might start plundering more of that sweet streaming gold. However, should they fail, their non-MCU productions will continue to sink like a ship with too many cannonball-sized holes in its hull.
