The game of matchweek 5 sees Arsenal, the only team yet to concede in the Champions League this season, take on joint top-scorers Bayern Munich at the Emirates. The Gunners are second only to Vincent Kompany's men in the league phase standings, but they have an awful record against the German giants, while Harry Kane has 15 goals and three assists in 21 appearances against his boyhood club.
The former Tottenham man, who's already scored 24 this term, has more goals against Arsenal than any other Premier League club. And he found the net on his first return to North London as a Münchner, converting a penalty in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at the quarter-finals stage of the UCL the season before last, a game that also saw Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and another Arsenal old boy, Serge Gnabry, register. A Joshua Kimmich header in the return leg knocked Mikel Arteta's men out.
Munich tore reigning champions PSG apart in their last Champions League fixture. They were 2-0 up and cruising thanks to a Luis Diaz double, only for the former Liverpool man to see red on the stroke of half-time. He'll miss this encounter through suspension. Even with 10 men, however, Bayern never looked like relinquishing their lead. They're coming off a thumping 6-2 victory over Freiburg at the weekend, in which Michael Olise grabbed a brace, and have won four of their past five meetings with Arsenal, scoring 18 in the process.
Arsenal, however, delivered a resounding statement of intent on Sunday, an Eberechi Eze hat-trick inspiring a ruthless drubbing of arch-rivals Tottenham. What was most ominous of all, however, was the sheer depth of Arsenal's squad. Even with Viktor Gyokeres given the night off and both Martin Odegaard and Gabriel injured, both their starting lineup and bench were teeming with talent. This feels like a group that – at long last – has what it takes to compete with the big fish.
