Microsoft Office 2010 looks set to be online for free

<>

We knew Microsoft was almost ready to lift the lid on the next version of its Office suite of software, but we hadn't expected the surprises that appear in the offing.

According to reports in the US and Japan, the next iteration will not be called Office 14, as had been expected, but will instead go by the name Office 2010.

Moreover, it will also be delivered as a web-based set of tools like Google Documents that will be free to use and supported by advertising on the same pages.

It is expected that traditional, boxed versions of the software will also go on sale, but that those will come with monthly fees or charges based on how much they're actually used.

So far, none of this is official, but we'll bring you the lowdown just as soon as Redmond lets the cat out of the bag.

6. Outlook 2007 Pro wastes gigabytes worth of space by not allowing email to point to an attachment (rather than send it repeatedly to different people). If one needs to send a large attachment to different people (but with a slightly different personal message), unfortunately Outlook requires that you send the attachment repeatedly - using up valuable space resources saving the same file over and over. Because of this flaw, I have tens of pst files, all around 3 gigs, using up too much space on my computer and slowing it down.

If a free online program gets around this problem, it will be very much welcomed - although one would imagine that the problem could be resolved with some relatively simple programming.

5. That's good.

As Microsoft has already been released Windows 7 RC for 12 months so just like this it will.

So, Doing such action will be the best to get ride for MS office 2010 (2014) Performance and popularity...

Thanx.

4. As much as I'd like to be pessimistic - I *think* somewhere, there are people inside Microsoft that are *starting* to understand a little and I don't think this will be an IE only solution. Have you seen the latest IE build with Gecko+WebKit built in, for example? And they have worked pretty hard to get PHP working with IIS nicely. Let's not forget Moonlight either.

One thing I would say though, is that Microsoft Office available, legitimately via Linux is going to win a fair people over to Linux.

3. @machead29

No **** Sherlock!

@chrisinbelgium cant see them doing that, Billy's boys need a comparable offering to Google docs so they dont lose out in the cloud completely.

IMHO Google is the ONLY REAL competition MS have had for a long time, and without them we would NOT be seeing this product announced.

1. Free? my guess is you will either have to have the boxed product on your pc, or pay for it. Not to forget using Windows on your pc of course. And IE...

I hope they prove me wrong
