England vs Australia: preview

For England, the entirety of the 2023 Cricket World Cup boils down to this. Bottom of the table and with a negligible chance of even vaguely threatening to make a late dash for the top four, today's clash with Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is their Everest, their chance to damage Aussie hopes, their final shot at clawing back some – any – pride.

And yes, this summer's Ashes series has a lot to do with it.

England need 287 to win, having skittled Australia out in the first session courtesy of a Chris Woakes four-for. It's a realistic target, but England have failed to score more than 200 in their last three games.

Australia currently sit in third on eight points, though they're in a congested mini-league with New Zealand, Afghanistan and Pakistan. 14 points is the target but 12 would probably be just about enough, which leaves them needing at least two victories from their last three fixtures.

Pat Cummins' men shaded the Kiwis by five runs in a thriller last time out, though the result, which was clinched courtesy of a heavy metal opening stand from the returning Travis Head and David Warner masked deficiences with the ball in hand, spinner Glenn Phillips the only bowler to emerge from the clash with any credit.

They were struck a double-blow in the lead-up to today's match with the withdrawals of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh, which could even things up nicely. For England have been woeful in all aspects of the game, ducks for Joe Root and Ben Stokes in the India clash rather summing up their tournament, and they'll need all the fortune they can get.

England team: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (c) (wk), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Australia team: David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood
