Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is a new Channel 5 docudrama series that follows the fall from grace of newsreader Huw Edwards, once one of the most trusted faces on the BBC, after a 2023 report in the Sun newspaper that he had allegedly paid a then vulnerable 17-year-old for sexually explicit images. Doc Martin and Wuthering Heights star Martin Clunes plays Edwards.
Written by Mark Burt, the two-part series was created with detailed input from the anonymous victim, who has been named 'Ryan Davies' to protect his identity. Channel 5 have defended the controversial docudrama, saying it brings to light the “urgent” issue of grooming and online safety.
Edwards has disputed the principal allegations made in the Sun, as the Channel 5 programme notes.
Edwards was subsequently arrested in 2024 after investigations in a separate case led to the discovery of WhatsApp messages containing indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty and expressed deep remorse for his actions, after which he was handed a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
Much like Adolescence, Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards focuses on the story from a child’s point of view. 'Ryan' said, “I refuse to let Huw Edwards or what he did define who I am or the life I will yet lead.”
