On Sunday I'm off to a conference about Wireless USB in Amsterdam. Don't fall off your chairs in amazement now! But Wireless USB is imminent here in the UK and it will shape the market over the next couple of years. And that's not just the analysts talking, that's what I believe.
Belkin is soon to release a kit and other manufacturers are sure to follow. The benefits of cable-free USB connections are obvious; why plug in a camera when you can beam the pictures through the air? But while it might seem like it's the be-all-and-end-all of USB, Intel announced at the San Francisco Intel Developer Forum that it was one of the key backers of USB 3.0. The USB 3.0 Promoter Group will look to "create a superspeed personal USB standard that can deliver over 10 times the speed of today's connection," says the bumph.
USB 3.0 should help restrain file transfer anger. Ever tried transferring a batch of music over a USB connection? Of course you have. USB 2.0 remains terribly slow for data transfer and if this can be sped up, the future looks rosy. Crucially, the new standard will also be designed to have both low power operation and improved data throughput.
In fact, we'll probably see both wired 3.0 and wireless USB standards shape our PC connectivity over the next decade: wireless for simple, low-bandwidth communication; wired for file transfers. I'll be reporting live from the Wireless USB Developers Conference on Monday.
