So here it is, my key themes for CES 2007. Bet you can't wait. Feel free to leave your own themes in the comments below...
Convergence/digital home
Yes, the old chestnut. But everyone still insists on talking it up! Both Bill Gates and Michael Dell touched upon it in their keynotes, but only the former has a true plan, centred around the Xbox 360 and Windows Home Server, the way network storage for the home was meant to be.
Wireless HDMI and USB
hey're coming. And they're set to pretty much change it all. No longer will your Sky HD box have to be next to your display, or your webcam attached to your PC. Woot!
Floundering networking companies
Several networking companies indicated that this would be the CES where they'd release media streaming kit that would really make home content sharing easy. And good. Who did it? None of them! Netgear, D-Link and Linksys all announced boxes that either lack format-support or don't like 1080i/p res video. (Apple TV, too, lacks 1080 support).
Next-gen DVD
Once again, this was a hot topic, but now the theme is how best to cope with both HD DVD and Blu-ray. LG had it's Super Multi Blue player and drive, though the PC drive reads and writes Blu-ray, but only reads HD DVD. Then there's Warner Bros' Total HD Disc. This is a dual-format disc, with one on one side, the other on the, er, other.
Forget it Sony
Sorry, but Sony is seriously falling behind in the race for well, anything. Who cares about the probable £549 PS3 when you can have IPTV over your Xbox 360 and fun with your Wii? The company doesn't seem to know what it is doing with networking or media sharing.
Coffee and cream
Americans have coffee with cream. I'd forgotten that. And, with late nights and early mornings aplenty, it was necessary, but also quite nice.
