Evil empires collide in the standout tie of Champions League matchweek 6. Xabi Alonso being summoned for talks with club president Florentino Perez illustrates where Real Madrid are right now, but they've had the measure of Man City in recent years, the defining image of their last clash being Kylian Mbappe's cheeky taunt of Josko Guardiol en route to a hat-trick.
Although Mbappe's superb chop and celebration ensured the Croat's picture-perfect moment of misery would endure, it was actually Ruben Dias that Real Madrid targeted mercilessly on that night in February, a tactic that's proven fruitful to Man City's opponents in the Premier League too.
They've signed so many players over the past 12 months that Pep Guardiola, the ultimate philosophy coach, appears to have shelved any attempt to stamp his signature on the team's pattern of play, with individual brilliance at the front through Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku, and at the back through Nico O’Reilly and Gianluigi Donnarumma, instead keeping them ticking over.
Some chemistry does now appear to be developing between Tijjani Reijnders, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki, which is more than can be said for Real Madrid's midfield. Los Blancos lost 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo at the weekend, with both goals stemming directly from Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni's failure to track back.
On each occasion they simply stood by and watched the Real Madrid backline grow increasingly overloaded. The prevailing narrative is that Madrid were so used to winging things under Carlo Ancelotti that pockets of the dressing room are actively resisting Alonso's methodical approach, and one win in five league games does nothing to counter that. Perez isn't known for his patience.
