With Bruno Guimaraes and Richard Rios stalking midfield and Jose Mourinho prowling the touchline, we expect Newcastle's clash with Benfica to be nothing short of full-blooded. The self-proclaimed Special One took the Eagles reins a month ago, but with any discernable impact yet to be felt, this is his opportunity to make a mark.

While it's early doors, Mourinho's W3 D2 L1 record isn't a step up from that of his predecessor Bruno Lage (W7 D2 L1), and for all the showbiz that came with it, his Chelsea reunion ended in defeat. Mourinho needs a statement result to get his Benfica stint up and running, so where better to secure it than at St James' Park, where he's overseen five defeats, four draws and just three victories? The last of those draws came against a side managed by Steve Bruce.

Benfica's two previous Champions League games have ended in defeat, but Vangelis Pavlidis – who scored a hat-trick against Barcelona in last season's competition – has scored four in his last four, and the comative Nicolas Otamendi looks tailor-made for Mourinho's style. Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, however, has developed a reputation for butter-fingers.

Not in his wildest dreams would Eddie Howe have envisaged the colossal impact that Nick Woltemade has made for the Magpies. The towering German has already contributed four goals, and Anthony Gordon in particular seems to have benefited from his arrival.
