Is the summer really drawing to an end already? It only seems like yesterday that the kids were coming home from school with names written all over their shirts and the faint smell of burnt text books in the air.

However, with the profusion of laptop deals aimed at getting your kids back into the classroom, it would seem that the days of getting up at noon, watching daytime TV and working out whose jumpers to use for goalposts are over.

With that in mind, What Laptop magazine has dug out some perfect laptops for school or homework. Here are their five recommended buys:

HP 6720s

The HP 6720s laptop is packed with features, such as the latest Intel Core2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM. Take advantage of the 250GB hard drive, backed with hours of battery life and a 15.4" TFT display. This laptop will allow you to take your work with you wherever you go. The HP 6720s is now just £495 (inc VAT) at Misco [sponsored link].

Medion Akoya S5610

If you're looking for something a little more stylish, the Akoya is being sold through Sainsbury's stores at the moment and has a great 15.4-inch screen, but the slimline design means it's portable as well as practical. At £599 (inc. VAT), it's the most expensive machine here but it's the cheapest we've found packing in Intel's new Centrino 2 package.

You'll find the Intel Core2 Duo P7350 fitted as well as 3GB of memory and a whopping 320GB hard drive. When it comes to graphics it's no slouch, either, as you find the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 3470 comfortably taking care of things. Overall, this is a great powerhouse portable.

Dell Inspiron 1525 T2390

Dell has changed its business plan of late, so whereas once you could only buy a Dell laptop straight from the company, now you can pick one up with your weekly shopping. One of What Laptop's favourites is the Dell Inspiron 1525, which is a pretty amazing machine in its own right but at £339 (inc. VAT) from Tesco, this is one of the better Dell deals around.

Powered by an Intel Pentium Core Duo T2390, there is plenty of power for homework and leisure. You also get 2GB of memory and 120GB hard drive, which is more than enough for school files.

Packard Bell EasyNote BG45-U-300

The winner of the world's longest laptop name goes to the Packard Bell EasyNote BG45-U-300, which is reviewed in the latest issue of What Laptop, which found it to be an exceptional machine for the asking price of just £399 (inc. VAT). It's for sale at PC World stores across the country and online.

With a 12.1-inch screen and running Windows Vista this is a great machine for carrying to school and back. It's not the most powerful of laptops but the Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390 processor, 1GB of memory and 80GB hard drive is good value for money.

Asus Eee PC 701

It's easy to forget that what made the Eee PC so great in the first place were its small child-like size and the amazing price. Now that most people have moved on the larger 901, there are some great deals to be had on the original model. Toys'R'Us has the high-end 4GB model for just £199 (inc. VAT), which makes it the best-priced netbook on the market. For that price you get 4GB of Flash storage, a Celeron M processor and 512MB of memory. It runs a version of Linux that comes with its own word processor and a whole host of tools for school so you won't need to buy anything else for your child.

Looking to leave compacts behind and get into DSLRs? You'll probably be looking for something from the lower end of the ranges and at a price you can afford.

We've picked out some of the best budget DSLR camera deals - but be aware that the prices are only correct as we hit the publish button and all external links are not our responsibility.

You get the picture!

Nikon D40

If you are looking for a budget entry-level DSLR but without sacrificing quality then you can't go too far wrong with Nikon's D40. It's got far more functionality than you could hope to find in a budget camera but it's also got a perfectly functional point and click ease that means you needn't get overly confused by apertures and ISOs.

Amazon are currently offering the Nikon D40 kit for a very reasonable £267 which includes a 18-55mm lens providing usability and versatility.

Canon EOS 450D

If you have a look around you can occasionally pick up the EOS 400D for a song, but bargains on Canon cameras are hard to find at the moment.

So we've plumped for the slightly more advanced 450D with a couple of lenses (18-55mm and 55-250mm) for £599 from Jessops

£599 Jessops offer for Canon EOS 450D with twin lenses

OlympusE510

If you look outside of the Canon-Nikon duopoly you can still get some nice cameras – and the Olympus E510 is a good example.

Park Cameras are offering the E510 – a 10mp snapper - and a 14-42mm lens for £350.

Sony Alpha 300D

Sony are putting a lot of investment into their DSLRs, and this entry level offering is excellent for inexperienced photographers.

A few rough edges aside, this is a good camera – and Jessops are offering the A300D with an 18-70mm lens for £349.99. You can also get a half-price memory card and a free photo book chucked in.

Samsung GX20

'Samsung', I hear you cry, 'do they make DSLRs?' Well actually they enjoy a special relationship with Pentax and the GX20 is pretty much the same as the Pentax K20D

Argos are offering the GX20 plus an 18-55mm lens for £650.

Panasonic kit impresses WotSat

Three months ago when Freesat launched, store shelves across the land were quickly emptied.

This was especially true of stocks of HD receivers - a situation no doubt fuelled by interest in coverage of Euro 2008 football on ITV HD and BBC HD.

Yes, England failed to qualify but those lucky enough to snag a receiver still had the joy of marvelling at the sharpness of an exciting tournament presented in subscription-free 1080i-o-vision while sharing a beer with their suitably impressed mates.

Since then, it's become a bit easier to find a Freesat box online and on the high street and Panasonic has rolled out its none-too-shabby rangeof Freesat and Freeview equipped plasma TVs.

Freesat price deals are being offered largely by the main high street dealers at the moment.

However, with more receivers to come from Alba, Humax and Metronic over the next nine months, and Freesat pledging to add many more channels and HD programming in the run up to Christmas to further stoke consumer demand, expect more bargains as the nights draw in.

So without further ado - WotSat's deal of the week is:

Panasonic TH-42PZ81B (from Laskys)

Panasonic remains on the more dependable brands around when it comes to good quality TVs and with its first Freeview equipped models you get what you pay for – Full HD plasma sets with Freesat HD, Freeview and analogue reception built in.

A brace of impressive picture processing technologies includes 100Hz processing and intelligent frame creation for generating a stable and smooth picture and 24p support for accurate reproduction of movies playing from a Blu Ray disc.

Three HDMI inputs and component connectors means that while you have HDTV built in you still have plenty of options for connecting up other HD kit such as a games console or upscaling DVD player and an SD card slot lets you playback photos and even AVC HD video files.

Laskys is currently offering the 42in model (enough screen for most people's living rooms) for £1,039.39 (including VAT), the cheapest deal around and a steal when you consider the quality of the TV and the fact that a standalone Freesat HD box costs £120.

More details of price cuts for Freesat kit including standard definition and hi-def Freesat receivers can be found on the What Satellite and Digital TV blog.

We all love a bargain and there is no better time to find one than when a new technology is introduced.

With Intel announcing its new Centrino 2 platform earlier this week, dealers are keen to clear out their stock of older Centrino laptops. There is nothing wrong with any of this kit; it's simply no longer as cutting-edge as it once seemed. This means there are currently plenty of laptop offers from the big name brands out there. Which means...

Show me the laptop bargains!

This means there are some amazing laptop bargains – some as little as £280 – to be had at the moment. With that in mind, here are the top deals What Laptop magazine has seen alive and kicking on the internet.

We're not talking Netbooks here; we're looking at full-sized machines with the power and versatility to offer you plenty of computing power for the years to come.

So without further ado What Laptop's deal of the week is:

HP Pavilion G7035ea (from Tesco)

The supermarkets are a great place to increasingly find bargains, with Tesco offering the HP Pavilion G7035ea M540 for £299 (inc. VAT).

It's a 15.4-inch widescreen model. It comes with an Intel Celeron M 540 (1.86GHz) processor and 1GB RAM to make your tasks easy to run, while the 120GB hard drive offers plenty of space for files. It runs Windows Vista Basic, packs in a DVD rewriter and what's more, you'll also get 299 Clubcard points with the purchase.

What Laptop's blog tips three more of the week's best buys. Take a look at their further picks and keep checking back as they highlight the biggest bargains on the net.
