Is there such a thing as a good deal on a Nintendo Wii console this Christmas? While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have enjoyed price cuts over the years, the price of the Wii has stayed rock-solid at £179.99 since it launched back in 2006.
The Nintendo Wii is firmly on track to be the best-selling games console for a third year in a row. In fact, the popularity of the Wii means that Nintendo is under no pressure to discount it.
Want one? Then be prepared to pay the full price. The same goes for the popular Nintendo Wii Fit accessory, which hasn't budged from its original £69.99 price point.
We've already predicted that the Nintendo Wii will be hard to find the closer we get to the Christmas holiday. It's an ideal family-friendly gift and demand is already accelerating. According to VGChartz, over 400,000 Wiis were sold across Europe last week, with Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Wii Play and Wii Music proving popular buys.
Most retailers are selling the Wii for the standard £179.99. The bog-standard Wii bundle includes a Wii remote, a Nunchuck and a copy of Wii Sports. You can find these packs at Dixons, Comet, Game, HMV, Play.com, GameStation, Tesco and John Lewis in the UK.
The cheapest Nintendo Wii
Asda is bucking the trend by offering the basic Nintendo Wii (with Wii Sports) pack for £157. It's listed at £157 online at Asda Direct but it's currently out of stock. Not to worry, though - Asda is selling the console for the same bargain price in its stores. Better hurry - don't expect the stock to last very long at this price.
As the basic £179.99 packs get snapped up by Christmas shoppers, tardy console hunters will be left with a choice of a more expensive 'Wii console + game' bundle or a Wii-free December 25th. Over at Dixons you can a variety of console + game bundles for £199.99 – Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Quantum of Solace, WALL:E are three examples.
Game is offering a complete Wii pack for £249.99, including a Wii console, two Wii Remotes, one Nunchuck plus Mario Kart (and plastic steering wheel). A good deal? Barely. If you stump up for the extra Wii Remote and Mario Kart separately, it'll cost you £245.
US games retailer GameStop expects the Wii to be in very short supply this Christmas. Ditto the console's most popular add-ons – Guitar Hero and Wii Fit. "Wii Fit is in very, very short supply," said a spokesman for GameStop. "It sells through as quickly as it hits the stores."
If you're quick, you can still find Wii Fit packs in stores. But you might have to pay over the odds for one. Wii Fit seems to be selling for £104.99 (and higher) on Amazon UK, while second-hand prices are starting at £80-£85 – a £15 mark-up. Play.com lists the Wii Fit for sale starting at £110.
The lack of standalone Wii Fit packs means that a pricier bundle deal could be the only way to get one. Game, for example, is currently selling Wii Fit + Family Ski for £99.99 or Wii Fit + Wii Music for £102.98.
