And I thought it was just me. My colleague over at .net magazine, deputy editor Oliver Lindberg, pointed me in the direction a blog by editor-in-chief of Guardian Unlimited, Emily Bell, that had particular resonance for something that had rather bugged me.

In case you don’t know, the Guardian’s online offering is undergoing a major overhaul as the paper drags the site into the present.

But it seems one problem is causing more consternation for readers than most. When the paper relaunched the front page of guardian.co.uk it chose a navigation that meant many direct links to specific parts of the site were dumped.

And that includes the link to the Football pages. Now you have to click on Sport to get to the football link. One more click - cue big reaction.

“Last weekend we transferred about half a million articles into a new layout and introduced a new navigation to the site,” writes Bell. “Apart from occasional slowness it went remarkably smoothly.

"The two main items of feedback were; where is our football link from the front page, and where is [columnist] Simon Hoggart - the former greatly outweighed the latter (no offence Simon). Well, it's always the things you least expect which can cause the most trouble.”

Bell says no changes will be made until everything’s settled down but we’d bet on the link returning. Still, doesn’t it just go to show how much folk still click around the internet – why not just type football.guardian.co.uk instead?

But, as one of the comments on Bell’s blog points out, the link is “like turning to the back page” of the paper. A fair point, Sir.
