Being a writer that has straddled both the technology and entertainment sector on more than one occasion, it's interesting what kind of questions are asked by Joe Public when it comes to movie watching.

Cinema nuts will always ask: 'Which movies did you watch at the weekend?' While tech-heads seem to be more interested in: 'What did you watch your movies on this weekend?'

With this in mind, here's the latest '7 days in AV', where we take the weird and wonderful from the world of home cinema - both film and tech - and mash it all together into one semi-coherent blog.

What got us excited…

Possibly the best statement ever about home cinema came from the mouth of Kevin Smith this week, when he brilliantly boasted about his home cinema habits. "I just want to get high and watch a Blu-ray Disc," said Smithy.

While this is a fantastic thumbs-up to Sony's format, we don't think the quote will be used in the company's press material anytime soon.

From Hollywood heavyweight* to home cinema lightweight, we managed to get up-close and personal with Acer's latest mini projector and were mightily impressed, and our bank's manager is altogether more relaxed with the fact that, in home cinema terms, small seems to be the new big.

Now we are on the subject of money, Teufel is the latest company to slash its prices in a bid to grab a bit of your cash before Christmas.

"Alistair Darling is not the only one slashing prices!" said the press release, and who are we to disagree? Bet the company can't match the Chancellor's rubbish eyebrows, though.

Back to Blu-ray and it seems that those looking to buy a cheap Blu-ray player will be hard pressed to find one this Christmas as they are going to be scarce.

Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Blu-ray isn't having a Wii-like Christmas rush, where the players are selling out faster than Arnold Schwarzenegger in a Japanese commercial, it's just to do with a manufacturing glitch earlier in the year. Doh!

The final thing to get us excited this week was Sharp's new 46in Aquos TV. And why were we excited? Well, it wasn't just the fact that the TV has Freeview built-in, nor that it has a Dynamic Contrast of 10,000:1.

It was that we had finally found the winner of TechRadar's annual 'Sunglasses too big for your face' award! With it being December, we cut it fine this year, but we think you'll agree that the Aquos 'sunglasses' picture is an outright winner.

*Disclaimer: TechRadar is no way fattist, we love people of all shape and sizes. The title of the story merely was a reference to his status as a filmmaker. We apologise profusely to any overweight people who were offended by our article.

5 common home cinema mistakes

Being an early adopter: "Oh, yes that HD DVD format look like a right winner. I'm going to spend hundreds of pounds on a player and re-buy my whole film collection. Well, at least films made by Universal Studios. Blu-ray? Pah, it'll never catch on."

Have you asked Toshiba for your money back yet?

Buying a TV that's too big: "What do you mean it's too big? You always said you wanted more inches, and I think a 52-inch set is quite modest. We'll chuck it in the corner of the room and you won't even know it's there."

A conversation overheard in Curry's just yesterday.

Still having 300-odd remotes: "Love, where did you put the TV remote? No, that one's for the AV receiver. No, that's for the hi-fi. It may look like the Telly one, but that's for the Blu-ray player. Oh, here it is – nope, that's for the surround sound..."

That sound you hear is of a grown man crying.

Forgetting that it's a home and not a cinema: "I know, and that's not all – I even got a popcorn maker installed AND a beer fridge."

Equivalent to the reason why middle-aged men buy fast cars.

Watching rubbish movies on your setup: "But there's something about The Day After Tomorrow. I just love the way it sounds on my system. And the special effects, don't let anyone tell you that Roland Emmerich can't do good action."

Robert. Emmerich. Can't. Do. Good. Action.
