India need to win the India v South Africa 2nd Test at at Assam Cricket Association Stadium, Guwahati, to avoid losing the two-match series.

South Africa won the tense, low-scoring 1st Test. The highest innings total was 189, and the visitors won by 30 runs after India failed to reach a target of 124. Proteas off spinner Simon Harmer, who took 4-30 and 4-21, was named player of the match.

But the 55 not out by South African captain Temba Bavuma was instrumental in setting India any sort of target. His batting has blossomed since assuming the captaincy, averaging 57 in that time, compared with 34 prior to that.

India’s captain Shubman Gill is out with the neck injury that curtailed his involvement in the 1st Test. So vice captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side for the first time officially, although he stood in for Gill during the second innings of the previous test.

India’s home advantage familiarity will be muted as this is the first test ever played on the ground. The furthest east of India's test venues, the early sunset has brought about a change to the playing hours.

Each day will start at 9am, with the first interval, at 11am, the tea interval of 20 minutes, and the lunch interval of 40 minutes will be taken at 1.20pm.
