O2 has confirmed to TechRadar that its 3G network has gone down in the UK - but only for pay monthly customers.
Those on pay as you go deals have dodged the data-less bullet, while BlackBerry users are also safe from the data demons.
However, despite the affirmations from O2 that the service is down, and also giving no date on when it will be fixed or why it even occurred, we managed to get our in office iPhone to connect fine over 3G to TechRadar and other sites as well.
Good news everyone!
Which means we were in the curious situation of being able to phone up O2 and say: "about your product... it's working?"
O2 didn't give us any indication over whether the data collapse was due to loads of people tethering their iPhones without paying the data charge, thus leading to an underestimation on how much support was going to be needed.
We'll let you know when more information surfaces - but if your connection is working or not, let us know in the comments below.

6. I was in my local Apple store when the "Black Out" hit and they updated my APN address from idata.o2.co.uk to mobile.o2.co.uk. This can be found by accessing settings>general>networ>cellular data network. I spoke to O2 iPhone support today and they said it was fine to do this. They advised me to reset settings to idata.o2.co.uk in a day or two once the problem is sorted.

4. The full 3G network on my Blackberry Bold is down, normally it says 3G then Blackberry Symbol, instead it simply says 3G. Furthermore O2 Active is also down on the same phone.

2. As I am on a PAYG iPhone tariff I should not be losing a connection according to O2. Of course I have lost connection despite having full 3G reception. Urgghhh! Dammit O2! Why do you have to be so incompetent! You should have expected heavy data traffic when you got exclusive access to a phone with 12 months free data & wifi! And they don't even know when they're going to fix it?! O2 you've just added another ********** customer to your large collection!

1. It wouldn't surprise me if the iPhone made it particularly difficult to recover from a fault. I've seen first hand how aggresive the iPhone can be when trying to establish a PDP context. One iPhone can try and establish a connection literally thousands of times in a relatively short period of time. A network full of them would create a very challenging situation.
