Real Madrid vs Liverpool: match preview

Liverpool head to the Bernabeu looking to pull off arguably the greatest fightback in the club's history, as they take on Real Madrid this evening in this Champions League last-16, second leg tie.

The Reds have a storied history of great European comebacks but having crashed to a dramatic 5-2 defeat to the Spanish giants in the opening leg at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp's men will need to invoke the spirit of Istanbul and then some to get through to the next round.

Liverpool's topsy-turvy form has seen them dish out a Premier League 7-0 thrashing to rivals Man United as well as flop to a disappointing 0-1 EPL defeat to relegation-threatened Bournemouth in the intervening weeks since the first leg, making it difficult to predict how they'll perform this evening in a game that looks likely be just for pride. 

Madrid's recent form doesn't suggest a calamitous collapse is likely on Wednesday, and there's also the ominous statistic that Real have progressed on 26 of 27 previous occasions after winning the first leg of a Champions League tie away from home.

The hosts come into this fixture off the back of a 3-1 win at home to Espanyol but remain nine points behind Barcelona in La Liga. 

Boss Carlo Ancelotti makes two changes from the Real Madrid side which played Espanyol at the weekend. 

Veteran striker Karim Benzema returns from an ankle injury to replace Rodrygo up front, while Antonio Rudiger replaces Aurelin Tchouameni at the back.

Liverpool have named an attacking side, making two changes from the side which slumped to defeat to Bournemouth.

James Milner replaces Stefan Bajcetic, who has a thigh injury, while Diogo Jota comes in for Harvey Elliott in a line-up which features four forwards.
