Virgin is already offering 50Mb broadband to customers

BT announced that it is ramping up its super-fast broadband plans for the UK this week, bringing speedy web access to Britain quicker than first anticipated.

Virgin Media has responded to this, however, believing that BT's plans still aren't quick enough.

Speaking to TechRadar, a Virgin spokesperson told us: "People in the UK do not have to wait for BT. Virgin Media already offers the fastest broadband in the country with its ultra-fast 50Mb service."

More speed

The service Virgin is referring to has been around since December 2008 and is currently available to Virgin customers for £51 a month, or £35 for those also signing up for a landline phone at £11 a month.

The spokesperson also told us: "By the end of this summer we will have completed our next generation roll out to 12.5 million homes and we're already piloting 200Mb. We've been saying for years that fibre optic broadband is the future."

9. I called Virgin Media three moths ago to ask for their fibre-based service. They told me they'd call me in three weeks with details. Three months later, and I've still heard nothing!

8. You pay the price of Milton Keynes having the best Telephone/cable system in the country during the 70's and 80's by being independant.

7. hmmm. what can I say, I live in Milton Keynes - BT owns the cable, which of, are you all sitting dow, aluminium and not copper. Virgin operates the network, neither will commit to a upgrade of the citys cable network - so poor is it that even for the digital switchover the council recomends we all put up a sat dish!!! A fibre net work can not come to soon - I have BT broadband with a paltry speed of 2 MB !!!!

2. I would happily take fibre optic broadband from whichever company supplies it to my house. Currently neither BT nor Virgin have fibre optic cable in my street and so I am left with a rather paltry 16Mbps (supposedly, at least. It is actually more like 8Mbps) connection.

1. Oh, right then Virgin. As I live in the middle of a city I'll just order your super fast fibre optics and... what's that? I can't? You don't offer any cable service at all to fully half of one of Britain's major tourist cities? How very useful. Your arrogant statement makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
