The best VPNs for streaming — top choices for Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and more based on expert testing
Unblock your favorite shows, movies, and events from anywhere in the world.
The best streaming VPNs ensure you never lose access to your favorite TV shows and movies, wherever you are globally.
They provide a connection that reduces the risk of snooping from unwanted third parties, and can even offer ways to avoid unwanted advertising and spam emails. What's more, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup around the corner, they're a great way to ensure you never miss a game if you're travelling.
That said, all the best VPNs perform differently when streaming. Plus, each come with their own unique features specifically tailored to help your streaming experience. So, choosing the right streaming VPN for your needs is essential.
We're constantly hands-on with a whole host of streaming VPNs. Using them in our daily lives, putting them through proprietary testing, and prying them for weaknesses, all so we can give you this list of our top five streaming VPNs, curated using our testing and experience for your benefit.
The three best streaming VPNs in 2026
Need a quick answer to your streaming struggles? Here's a rundown of the five best streaming VPNs:
1. NordVPN — the best VPN overall ($3.09 per month)
NordVPN provided the most seamless streaming experience we encountered throughout testing. It offered incredibly quick loading times, little buffering, and never caused us to encounter any VPN detection warnings. At only $3.09/month (with a 30-day money-back guarantee), it's also good value, making it an easy first-pick streaming VPN for most people.
2. Norton VPN - super-smooth streaming for $40
Norton has shot to second in our latest streaming rankings thanks to some unbelievable showings with global streaming services. It fell short slightly while watching live events, which is why it remains second for now, but at only $40, you won't get better performance for less right now.
3. Proton VPN: privacy-focused and streaming-ready
Proton has risen to third thanks to continuing its strong performance, where many VPNs dropped off. That said, some strange issues with Disney, ITV, and TVNZ+ stop it rising further in our rankings for now. However, if you're new to VPNs, this is a top choice thanks to great levels of explanation and a strong suite of features.
The 5 best streaming VPNs in 2026
Why you can trust TechRadar
Editor's note: We just did a huge new round of testing and the results are in! PrivadoVPN and Norton VPN both enter the guide, with the latter jumping all the way into second. Interestingly this time around Prime Video and US YouTube proved difficult for almost every VPN, so don't judge a VPN too harshly on this. As ever, these ranking are split by the finest of margins, so you could well be happy with any one of them!
The best VPN for streaming
1. NordVPN
Unblock content from around the world in HD and 4K
Streaming services unblocked: Netflix, Prime Video (except Australia), BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Sling TV, HBO, DAZN | Compatible devices: Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and more | Server countries: 140+ | Maximum devices supported: 10 | 24/7 live chat support: Yes
NordVPN remains unquestionably the best VPN for streaming. With servers in over 140 countries, you can never be short of a regional channel to watch while connected. SmartPlay and its NordLynx protocol also play a big part in the continually reliable streaming performance we saw throughout our testing.
It unblocked Netflix and Disney+ flawlessly in every region. Local streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, 9Now, and TVNZ+ also proved no issue. Where NordVPN did slightly struggle was with Prime Video and YouTube US. That said, these proved problematic for all our tested VPNs, so it's not a huge black mark on its score for now.

Ease of use
NordVPN has apps for every streaming platform - including Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, and so on - which are all easy to set up.
You can sign in using a QR code or email/password combination, but the former of these is super handy on TV-based devices where you'd otherwise be left typing with a remote.
The in-app experience is nearly identical across platforms, handy if you're new to VPNs and haven't quite worked your way around. Android TVs most closely resemble the traditional phone or desktop layout, with icon panels directing you to the additional features on offer.
Scrolling for servers on TVs proved to be nicely responsive too, meaning we weren't left frustrated while a laggy interface tried to catch up with what we wanted.
Overall, there should be little to confuse you if you're new to VPNs, or have yet to try NordVPN on platforms aside from your phone or computer.
Performance
This simplicity is then well-complemented by NordVPN's performance. Testing NordVPN across computers, phones, tablets, and streaming sticks, we constantly found our server connection times to be quick, no matter if we were connecting locally or to a more distant country.
What's more, as mentioned already, NordVPN hardly struggled with streaming services whatsoever. Only Prime Video Australia and YouTube US proved problematic. But, since these were a problem for every VPN we tested to some degree, it's more likely that these services have ramped up their VPN detection measures than so many VPNs have suddenly gotten worse.
Regardless, Netflix, Disney+, iPlayer, 7Plus, 9Now, TVNZ+, ITVX, and more were all unblocked seamlessly this time round, a stellar display.
It's more than likely that NordVPN's SmartPlay capabilities played a considerable role in this. SmartPlay incorporates traditional SmartDNS technology and weaves the privacy benefits of a VPN throughout. This means rather than just your DNS server changing, your whole virtual location can be changed and encrypted, all while hiding your IP address.
The best family-friendly streaming VPN
2. Norton VPN
A family-friendly solution that's super-effective
Streaming services unblocked: Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Sling TV, HBO, DAZN | Compatible devices: Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and more | Server countries: 90+ | Maximum devices supported: 10-20 (depending on plan) | 24/7 live chat : Yes (optional upgrade)
Norton VPN has jumped to second in our rankings. Despite having only a little over 90 countries with servers, its continuous efforts to improve the product in recent months have seen its streaming performance begin to challenge for the top spot.
In our testing, it encountered a small number of minor issues, namely with 7Plus and 9Now, but was otherwise flawless. It even handled both Amazon and YouTube US, two platforms that bested almost every other VPN we tested. Where did it fall short? Live events.
We found streaming live sports and TV on Norton far more problematic than with NordVPN, especially annoying if you're looking to keep up with the World Cup or Wimbledon.

Ease of use
Norton is a family favorite thanks to its simple apps, and it's no different with the VPN. You can get yourself set up in a matter of seconds, and it's got apps for essentially every platform.
The only omission to note is Amazon's new VegaOS for Fire Stick, though as yet this hasn't been widely adopted, so it isn't a huge red flag.
Once you're loaded up, its apps are laid out in such a way that practically anyone should be comfortable navigating it.
While this is, in part, due to a current lack of broader features as you'd expect from say NordVPN or Surfshark, it's perfect if you're new to VPNs or looking to set up an elderly family member with some added protection online.
This simplicity also means you'll have no issue moving between devices. There's little there to change so you can quickly get to grips with customising your experience and getting connected no matter the device you're on.
Performance
Norton's performance came as a welcome shock this time round. In particular, it had absolutely zero issues with Prime Video and US YouTube, two platforms that had proven impossible to crack for big names like Surfshark and CyberGhost.
Otherwise across the major platforms it was flawless. This includes Netflix in multiple regions, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, TVNZ+ and more.
It did have some minor struggles with 7Plus and 9Now. That said, both platforms eventually worked after a couple of server changes, so no major concerns there.
This time round it falls short of top spot purely due to its performance with live events. Testing it with sports events in particular across platforms such as Peacock and Eurosport we saw more instances of buffering and quality drops than we'd like, and certainly less than we had with NordVPN.
The best beginner streaming VPN
3. Proton VPN
A seriously fast VPN with Swiss security
Streaming services unblocked: Netflix, Prime Video UK + US, BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, ITV Hub, All4, 9Now, 10Play | Compatible devices: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, Router | Server countries: 140+ | Maximum devices supported: 10 | 24/7 live chat support: No
Proton VPN is not just a top streaming VPN, but the best recommendation I can give for beginners right now.
It's packed with explainers, has well-laid-out apps, and offers support guides for any issue you might face. It's also well known for its Swiss origins and strong privacy credentials, great if you're keen to remain super-secure without sacrificing massively on performance.
In testing it encountered some minor issues with a couple of domestic services and, more importantly, struggled to unblock Prime Video in several regions, rather than just the one (or none) as we'd seen with NordVPN and Norton. Otherwise, it comfortably dealt with what we threw at it.

Ease of use
Proton VPN has the same level of compatibility as any of the top streaming VPNs. This means you can install it on any streaming device, and if anything isn't compatible, you have the option of installing it as a router VPN instead to bypass the issue.
Signing in, you don't get the option of a QR code; instead, you're directed to using a specific link and entering a unique code, not a bad alternative, but a tad slower.
Once in, all of Proton VPN's apps might appear a tad more daunting than other providers due to the darker colours, but on most devices, you'll quickly see explainers for the features you're greeted with and won't need to click for long before finding what you need.
On smart TVs, you're greeted by a sea of flags to scroll through, which is a bit less optimal, though, with time, it's a simple enough experience to navigate.
Performance
Streaming with Proton was broadly stress-free compared to the majority of VPNs. Yes, it couldn't unblock Prime Video in Australia, Canada, or Japan, but this service bested almost every VPN during this round of testing.
Outside of this, Proton's only noticeable struggles were with YouTube US, Disney+ and ITV in the UK, and TVNZ+. All of these issues were quickly fixed with a server change or two, so it's nothing too big to stress about.
Yet again, it was streaming live events with Proton that proved the difference maker in our rankings. Using Peacock, we'd sometimes see the stream completely drop out, and often there'd be struggles to reach high-quality video, all in the space of one football match.
While this isn't ideal, it's still far better than you might expect from the VPNs we don't rank on this list. Plus, VPN performance with these services constantly changes, so it could soon be that this issue subsides.
Other VPNs I've tested and recommend
4. ExpressVPN
Top contender holds all the keys to streaming around the globe
Streaming services unblocked: Netflix (some) , Prime Video (except US), BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Sling TV, HBO, DAZN, Kayo, Peacock | Compatible devices: Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and more | Server countries: 110+ | Maximum devices supported: 10-14 (depending on plan) | 24/7 live chat support: Yes
ExpressVPN, like Proton VPN, is a strong VPN choice if you're new to the world of VPNs. ExpressVPN's interface makes it unquestionably simple to find a server, connect, and remove all worries about security, mainly thanks to its one-click connection design.
Where ExpressVPN fell short was with Netflix. Very few of the best streaming VPNs struggled with Netflix this time around, yet ExpressVPN failed to unblock the service in both Australia and Japan.
It's also held back by its price. While it's the same price per month as NordVPN, ExpressVPN offers far fewer locations and isn't the quickest VPN out there when not on its Windows-only Lightway Turbo protocol

Ease of use
If there's one thing we love about ExpressVPN, it's how easy it is to use, no matter what device you're on. ExpressVPN is available across everything from your traditional computers and mobiles, so Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS, through to your smart TV, WiFi router, and streaming boxes such as Fire Stick or Apple TV, all of which provide near identical experiences too.
Much like NordVPN, on trickier devices, to enter your username and password, you can use a QR code to sign in (or sign up), meaning no worries about typing with your TV remote. Once you're in, it's as simple as clicking the big red button presented to you if you simply want to connect to your nearest server to be secure.
Alternatively, you can use its server list to scroll through servers across 113 countries. It should be noted, however, that ExpressVPN only supports ten simultaneous connections on its Basic plan.
This, for many, won't be an issue, but once you tally up streaming devices, tablets, phones, and laptops that might be present for a family, it might be the case that this is too few, in which case Surfshark may be the best alternative.
Performance
ExpressVPN's performance was, for the most part, impressive. While it struggled with Prime Video US, this was an issue for many VPNs so is not a huge red flag. It's Netflix performance, however, proved more problematic.
The provider failed to unblock Netflix is Australia and Japan, no matter how hard we tried to fix it. It's the only provider on this list to have encountered problems with Netflix this time round. Given how fine the margins are between the best streaming VPNs right now, it's hard to ignore such an issue either.
It also performed similarly to Proton with live events. While ExpressVPN never struggled unblocking the platforms we were watching on, we'd occasionally see our stream drop out entirely, or struggle to reach the video quality we'd expect from the platforms.
5. PrivadoVPN
Super fast and strong streaming performance
Streaming services unblocked: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Sling TV, HBO, DAZN, Kayo, Peacock | Compatible devices: Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and more | Server countries: 49 | Maximum devices supported: Unlimited | 24/7 live chat: No
PrivadoVPN is probably the cheapest VPN to ever feature in our top streaming VPN rankings at only $1.11 per month. That said, its performance was notably strong despite its economical approach.
While it failed to unblock Prime Video in any region as well as US YouTube, these are two providers that, as mentioned already, bested almost all VPNs. Outside of this, it only slightly struggled with Disney+. No issues anywhere else, and only $30 for this performance.

Ease of use
PrivadoVPN's apps are simple to the point of almost looking too basic. You've got a toggle to turn the VPN on and off, a hamburger menu for accessing its few features and customisations, and that's about it.
What this means is that it's near-impossible to be confused, no matter your experience level. Plus, it means you're able to connect and stream in a matter of seconds without being bogged down by additional customization options.
This is perfect if you're looking for a cheap introduction to VPNs, or need a quick, secure option to tide you over while you look for the perfect VPN for your needs.
Performance
Aside from Prime Video, PrivadoVPN performed superbly. No issues with the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITVX or TVNZ+.
It did find some small issues with Disney+ though these were quickly rectified by a server switch which is no hassle at all. All in all, a very strong showing for a VPN that'll cost you less than a tank of gas.
That said, zero access to Prime Video is a huge loss for some people, and a big reason for it not being higher on this list. What's more, it regularly struggled with live events far more than other VPNs.
Be it dropouts or poor picture quality, we regularly struggled with live sports on Peacock and Eurosport using Privado VPN. Thankfully, its app interface is so small and simple that it was quick enough to resolve the bigger dropouts, but this runs the risk of missing a crucial moment should you be watching a big game.
How we test VPNs
We constantly test VPNs, and finding the best streaming VPNs is no different. We use a combination of hands-on experience and proprietary testing to challenge a VPN's streaming capabilities, probe it for weaknesses, and find features and reasons why certain VPNs stand out from the rest. Some of the factors we consider include:
Network size: The best streaming VPNs need a wide server spread. This ensures you can not only access your favorite shows from abroad, but also you needn't worry, should you simply wish to browse securely in the country you're in.
Unblocking abilities: No streaming VPN makes this list if it isn't seamlessly capable of unblocking the most popular streaming services. This includes Netflix (across multiple regional libraries), Prime Video, and Disney+. We also test more regional services such as BBC iPlayer, 9Now, 10Play, and Channel 4.
Customer support: In a scenario where your streaming VPN might struggle, good customer support is a lifesaver. We test customer support teams to see how well they can troubleshoot issues you might encounter, how successful the fix was, and how generally friendly and helpful they come across in situations where you might be stressed. Plus, we look through all support articles and other guidance provided to see how in-depth a VPN provider's support framework is.
Performance: Streaming VPNs excel when they have speeds to support any quality of stream out there. High-speed streaming VPNs ensure you never encounter slow loading times, unwanted buffering, or poor stream quality for as long as your show lasts. Despite this, it should be remembered that you don't need gigabit speeds to achieve high-quality streaming, so even some of the supposedly slow VPNs will be more than capable of giving you what you need. We test streaming VPNs at all times of the day, across each protocol, incorporating different settings. From this, we can see variations in speeds, connection times, latency, jitter, and more.
How to choose a VPN
Much of choosing your streaming VPN will come down to personal preference, but that doesn't mean it's everything. The factors listed above, network size, unblocking, customer support, and performance, are all key considerations, but each VPN can bring alternative features to the table, which might also take your fancy.
What's more, consider the devices you're using it across. How many devices are there? Which devices are they? Different streaming VPNs can offer varying experiences depending on the platform you use them on, plus, not all VPNs have unlimited simultaneous connections, so you might need to check a VPN provider's compatibility before committing.
Finally, which streaming services do you use the most? Some streaming services do more than others to prevent the use of VPNs to access their content – Netflix, for example, is notorious for this. So, while all the VPNs on this list were capable of unblocking every service we tested, some services can cause more headaches than others. FAQs
What is the best streaming VPN 2026?
NordVPN is the best streaming VPN right now. It flawlessly unblocks everything we test and offers an app experience clean enough that anyone from VPN veterans to beginners should be capable of using it, no matter the streaming device they plan to use.
What streaming services work with a VPN?
Most streaming services work with a VPN. However, streaming services are constantly working on ways to prevent VPNs from accessing their content, so sometimes this can change.
Despite this, our testing showed you can unblock Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, BBC iPlayer, Sling TV, DAZN, YouTube, Disney Plus, Fubo, All 4, ITV Hub, and even more small domestic networks.
It is possible that a VPN will work to unlock a service one day and not the next. This is more common with lower-quality providers, but if you find it happening to you, check out our guide on what to do when your VPN doesn't unblock Netflix anymore.
Should I choose a free streaming VPN?
Most of the best free VPNs struggle with streaming. Currently, PrivadoVPN Free is one of the few free VPNs to offer a notable amount of streaming capacity for you to take advantage of.
The issue predominantly comes due to data caps and bandwidth limits. Free streaming VPNs often limit their capability to promote choosing the paid alternative, so while some free VPNs may allow some streaming, you'll unlikely be able to binge-watch to your heart's content.
We test and review VPN services in the context of legal recreational uses. For example: 1. Accessing a service from another country (subject to the terms and conditions of that service). 2. Protecting your online security and strengthening your online privacy when abroad. We do not support or condone the illegal or malicious use of VPN services. Consuming pirated content that is paid-for is neither endorsed nor approved by Future Publishing.
