From the relatively unknown Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan taking Men's Singles gold after Ilia Malinin stumbled twice to the ice, to France's controversial new pairing of Laurence Fournier-Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron pipping reigning three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates to Ice Dance gold, Figure Skating has produced the biggest shocks of the Winter Olympics.
The American 'Blade Angels' trio of Alysa Liu (76.59), Amber Glenn (67.39) and Isabeau Levito (70.84) entered the Women's Singles as heavy favorites, only for Japanese teenager Ami Nakai (78.71) to steal the show. Milano-Cortina is one of the 17-year-old's first senior events, but she set the tone in the Short Program on Tuesday. To think that just a year ago, she finished 15th at Japanese nationals.
Handed the lowly opening slot of the session, she conjured up a perfect triple Axel, triple Lutz, triple Toe Loop combo and triple Loop, but the sheer joy of Nakai's performance was what set her apart. Liu was similarly free-flowing but a touch sloppy with her execution, but Glenn was tense from the outset, and inconsolable afterwards.
In the silver medal position between Nakai and Liu ahead of the decisive Free Skating session is Nakai's compatriot Kaori Sakamoto (77.23), who's set to hang up her skates tonight. With the top nine skaters separated by only eight points, it's all to play for.
