Matters are likely to get worse before they get better for the Silver Ferns, who have nowhere to hide as the Constellation Cup action crosses the ditch from Australia to New Zealand. The holders are 2-0 down after back-to-back 17-point beatdowns, and in a darkly comic twist, they've made a rod for Netball New Zealand's (NNZ) back by winning each of their past eight home encounters against the Diamonds.
Player complaints triggered coach Noeline Taurua's abrupt suspension on the eve of the trans-Tasman tournament, and NNZ's opaque handling of the case has compounded the sense of chaos. Gail Parata has stepped down from her role as national selector in support of Taurua, who ended the Silver Ferns' 19-year and nine-year Netball World Cup and Constellation Cup droughts.
It hasn't helped NNZ's cause that Taurua was renowned for her strict fitness regimen, and both games so far have been decided by late Silver Ferns collapses. Australia outscored their opponents by 24-11 in the final quarter of Game 1, and by 21-9 in the third quarter of Game 3. By contrast, New Zealand outscored Australia by 14 points in Game 1, 11 in Game 2, and 18 in Game 3 a year ago. Interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie and captain Karin Burger have put the slumps down to mental barriers.
Their counterparts Stacey Marinkovich and Liz Watson now need just one more victory to win the trophy outright for the first time since 2018. The Diamonds' past three triumphs were decided on aggregate, something that's been scrapped for the 2025 series. This means that if New Zealand manage to claw their way back to parity, Game 4 will go to extra time. Grace Nweke is vital to their cause, but she's had to fight off relentless pressure from Courtney Bruce in particular, while getting precious little support from her teammates.
