It feels symbolic that Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund should meet with both sides a single point shy of a place in the top eight (teams that finish between ninth and 24th have to navigate a playoff). These are two clubs that so desperately covet a seat a Europe's top table, but have been left scrabbling for the scraps of triumphs – or, more accurately, near-triumphs – past.

With both sides already out of all domestic competitions, Spurs are on the brink of sacking Thomas Frank a mere seven months into his reign, and Niko Kovac might soon find himself in the same boat if Borussia miss out on the Round of 16.

Tottenham, surprisingly, have won all three of their home Champions League ties this season without conceding, though they were all against relative minnows. Dortmund, meanwhile, have been shabby on the road, conceding four to both Man City and Juventus. They're also coming off an embarrassing 2-2 draw with Bodø/Glimt, in which they twice let a one-goal lead slip at home.

Fabio Silva had a torrid time in England with Wolves, but he's pushing for a starting spot ahead of Serhou Guirassy or Karim Adeyemi. Whoever gets the nod should fancy their chances against a shambolic Spurs backline missing its most dependable component. Micky van de Ven is suspended. Conor Gallagher, meanwhile, is ineligible.
