O2 has told TechRadar that it will be 'several weeks' before HTC Desire owners on its network will get the Android 2.2 upgrade, with tests on a service provider specific version ongoing.
The eagerly awaited upgrade to the Android OS brings a host of new features and functionality, but its arrival for phones locked to networks will be weeks and not days away.
An O2 spokesman indicated to TechRadar that any update would be 'several weeks' away, although the network is well aware that Desire owners are champing at the bit for Android 2.2 - nicknamed FroYo.
ASAP
"We're working with HTC to bring the latest version of Android, 2.2 FroYo, to our HTC Desire customers as soon as possible," said the spokesman
"We expect this to take several weeks and we will update our customers once the new software is available."
The update follows HTC's revelation that people who own unlocked handsets will be able to get the Android 2.2 upgrade from this weekend.
T-Mobile has told TechRadar that it is expecting to upgrade its Desire customers in September, which tallies fairly closely to O2's timeline.

6. I've just come off the phone with an O2 operative and they as about usual as a chocolate hammer on a hot summers day. I enquired as to when we were going to get the new & eagerly awaited for desire 2.2 update and after waiting an eternal 10 minutes she had now idea when it was coming! Huumph! also can anyone tell me are there any good screen protectors that would help make the screen more visible in sunlight as mine turns inti an very expensive mirror.

Well, no need to keep pressing System Software Update to check if it's on it's way lol.
No mobile should be locked into a network in my opinion, for contract only anyway, no reason they can't give you the phone unlocked, what does it matter if it's unlocked on contract, your not gonna pay £30+ pm then go and use it on a payg on another network?

3. What exactly is it that the operators have to do and why does it take so long? We're talking about ONE model of phone.
Isn't the smartphone the perfect example of why phone companies should stop tinkering with the OS and let the manufacturer take care of it, then we could all get our updates at the same time and enjoy the same experience without pointless interfering from phone companies who can't resist slapping their logo on things.

1. I bought my Desire as a phone only from O2 and have a 12 month simplicity deal with them seperatly, does that mean my phone could be an unlocked desire?
