Arsenal travel to the San Siro on Tuesday night knowing that a single point will be enough to book their place in the Champions League last 16, but Inter Milan stand in their way in a clash of two elite defensive sides.

That momentum has slowed following back-to-back defeats to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, the latter ending Inter's 18-match unbeaten home run in the Champions League. Another defeat would see Inter lose three consecutive Champions League matches for the first time.

Despite that setback, Cristian Chivu's side remain in strong form overall, with six wins, one draw and one defeat in their last eight games. A 1-0 victory over Udinese at the weekend, sealed by Lautaro Martínez, extended their lead at the top of Serie A, where they have won five of their last six matches and kept four clean sheets.

Inter's defensive record is impressive, but Arsenal’s is even stronger. The Gunners have conceded just one goal in the competition, a minor footnote in a statement win over Bayern Munich, before comfortably dispatching Club Brugge 3-0 to move within touching distance of a top-eight finish.

While a result is not essential, victory would give Mikel Arteta's side a club-record seventh straight UEFA win. However, Arsenal arrive off the back of consecutive goalless Premier League draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, with the latter ending a long away scoring run.

Inter claimed a 1-0 win over Arsenal in last season's league phase, a result that avenged their heavy 5-1 home defeat in the 2003–04 campaign, and another tightly contested European encounter looks likely on Tuesday.
