Atletico Madrid's start to the 2025/26 La Liga campaign has been far from ideal. Simeone's side failed to win any of their first three league fixtures before picking up their first win against Villarreal. Atletico then went on to lose to Liverpool in the Champions League before drawing away to Mallorca in a disappointing outing. As it currently stands, Atletico's shaky form sees them sit 8th in La Liga on 9 points out of a possible 18 after most recently defeating Rayo Vallecano 3-2 thanks to a superb hattrick from Julien Alvarez.

Despite Atletico's wobbly start to the season, Simeone's side will take some solace in the fact that his side has a fairy competitive recent history against Real Madrid. Last season the two clubs met in the Champions League where Atletico were knocked out on aggregate score despite winning the home game 1-0 after a goal from Connor Gallagher in the first minute of the game. In the league last year, the two clubs were stalemate with both fixtures resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Life under Xabi Alonso has been pretty impeccable so far for Los Blancos side. Winning all of their La Liga fixtures, Real sit top of La Liga on 18 points. Alonso has seemingly managed to elevate key players' game, with the likes of Mbappe scoring 7 goals in 6 league appearances so far this season. As well as Mbappe, Alonso has found the perfect mix of players to compliment his style, with youngsters, Arde Guller and Franco Mastantuono flourishing in his new system.

Real Madrid will travel to the Metropolitano as favorites this weekend but in a derby of this magnitude, history shows form is never an accurate indicator of the outcome. The experience and game management of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid will be looking to climb the league table as they face off against the rejuvenated outfit of Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid side.
