For our money the Simba Hybrid Original is the best hybrid mattress you can buy right now. It's one of Simba's more affordable hybrid options, and while it doesn't have all the advanced layers you'll find in the more premium models, it does its job simply and effectively, providing a firm, supportive and comfortable sleep surface that won't overheat at night.

The Simba Hybrid Original is made with five layers: a top layer of the brand's own Simbatex foam to provide cushioning and airflow, a zoned layer of micro springs to give you support where it's needed, an open-cell foam layer for structural support and extra airflow, a sprung base with up to 1,000 pocketed barrel springs that deliver edge-to-edge support, and a final layer of heavy support foam to keep everything steady. 

What all this adds up to is a medium-firm mattress that's suitable for most sleepers, with excellent edge support, good motion isolation and impressive temperature-regulating qualities. In our Simba Hybrid Original review we concluded that this is a quality mattress at a good price, with a responsive feel (it's one you'll lie on top of rather than sinking into). We were also taken with Simba's environmental credentials: it's B-Corp certified and its mattresses are made with ethically-sourced materials and 100% recyclable.

The only real downside to the Simba Hybrid Original is that you can't always get it at a discount; while Simba used to run sales pretty much constantly, that's no longer the case, so you'll have to choose your time to buy carefully if you want a bargain.

Best premium hybrid

The Panda Bamboo Hybrid mattress is one of our top mattress picks overall, and it should be high on your shopping list if you're in search of the best hybrid mattress. In our review we found that it ticked nearly all the boxes: it's a supremely comfortable hybrid mattress made with three layers of foam and multi-zonal springs, and it does a great job at keeping everything aligned at night as well has regulating temperature.

Its bamboo cover helps with temperature regulation as well as being hypoallergenic and antibacterial; the bamboo is organic and ethically sourced, while its foams are CertiPUR approved and 100% recyclable, making this hybrid mattress an environmentally sound choice.

The Panda's rated a 7 for firmness; we found it to be slightly firmer than that, and we feel it's an excellent choice for back and stomach sleepers, however lighter side sleepers could well find it a little bit too firm as you don't really sink into this mattress. We found it performed well in terms of pressure relief, motion isolation and edge support; in fact our main issue with the Panda was the initial off-gassing smell, which was noticeably stronger than with other mattress we've tested, and which took about a week to fully dissipate.

Panda doesn't have its mattress discounted the whole time, so you'll have to hang for a sale if you want to pay less than full price; even at RRP, though, it's still a worthwhile buy.

Best for cooling

The multi-award winning Otty Original Hybrid combines pocket springs with cosy foam for support and comfort all night long. Features include heat-regulating memory foam for extra cooling and high-density foam to keep your spine in the perfect position for healthy sleep. Meanwhile, the 16cm spring layer and firm base offer maximum support and stability.

In our in-depth review we tested the Otty Original Hybrid over several weeks and were impressed by the minimal motion transfer it offered (ideal if you have a restless co-sleeper), as well as its supportive feel that veered more towards the firmer side of medium-firm, perfect if you sleep on your back or side.

The 25cm-deep mattress offers plenty of support with its 15cm high-gauge springs that sit beneath two layers of premium foam, one of which is super-cosy pressure-relieving memory foam. Other perks include a quilted cooling cover for instant comfort the minute you lie down and there’s plenty of breathability throughout with the 600 wrapped springs providing excellent airflow as well as support and stability.

We put this mattress to the test for three weeks in our in-depth review and found the quality to be reassuringly high for the discounted price. We were particularly impressed by the minimal motion transfer, although if you are lighter in weight then you might find this bed to be a little on the firm side.

Best softer hybrid

When it comes to affordable luxury, top sleep brand DreamCloud is a great choice for build quality, comfort and support. Its Luxury Hybrid features a sumptuous quilted top, superior memory foam, a layer of responsive springs and a sturdy foam base that ensures stability and cosiness from the foundation up.

With a balanced medium-firm feel and plenty of plushness this option ticks a lot of boxes for all sleeping positions, although if you are heavier in weight then you might find it a touch too soft; conversely, it may prove a little too firm for lighter sleepers.

In our review, our tester slept on the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid for three weeks and found that it offered supreme edge support, little to no off-gassing and first-class motion isolation, but on the downside, they did find it runs a little hot.

Best back support

If you’re in need of a firmer-feel mattress that offers support for your back then the German-engineered Origin Hybrid mattress, designed by orthopaedic professionals, could be just what you’re looking for. 

As well as zoned support for spinal alignment, this bed offers plenty in the way of cosiness with soothing foam that perfectly cushions pressure points. Other features include cooling foam, and high-quality materials such as Australian wool, 100% natural Tencel and bamboo foam.

We put the Origin Hybrid to the test and found it to be particularly firm, which makes it ideal if you are heavier in weight or need extra support. The motion isolation and temperature regulation were also excellent, although it wasn't quite so good when it came to edge support; it did okay along the sides but wasn't so hot at the corners. 

If you suffer from back problems, it is always a risk when trying out a new mattress, luckily the 200-day trial that comes with this mattress will give you ample time to see if the Origin Hybrid is a comfortable fit for you.

How to choose the best hybrid mattress

If you’re looking for full support, cosiness and pressure relief with plenty of cooling, then a hybrid mattress is a good choice. These mattresses typically comprise several layers that combine foam and springs so you get the best of both worlds.

Generally speaking, the deeper the mattress the more comfort you will experience with each layer working its magic to give you a comfortable night’s sleep. And just like spring or foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses come in a range of firmness options too, so if you sleep on your back or are heavier in weight look out for a firmer feel bed to help your body get the support it needs. 

If you need more cushioning at your pressure points, you sleep mainly on your side or are lighter in weight then the more plush options will suit you well. Also look out for mattresses that have a cosy top layer.

Because hybrid mattresses can be heavy, practical features like handles will help you manoeuvre the mattress especially when rotating it. Note, that hybrid mattresses are one-sided so they will not need to be flipped like a traditional spring mattress.
