India vs Australia: preview
The 13th World Cup final is India vs Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. These nations also contested the 8th final, in Johannesburg in 2003, which Australia won by 125 runs.
When the sides met on October 8 in Chennai, the first game for both these sides in this year’s world cup tournament, India won by six wickets with 8.4 overs to spare. Having lost this first game, Australia then lost their second one, too, against South Africa, by 134 runs. Since then Australia have won all their games.
India have simply won all their games, and have rarely looked troubled doing so. In Virat Kohli they have the leading run scorer in the tournament. His 711 runs is 117 runs more than anyone else has scored. In Mohammed Shami they have the leading wicket taker. Shami was not even in the Indian side at the beginning of the tournament. He has only played in six of India’s ten games, but has taken 23 wickets at an average of 9.13 in them. The next highest wicket taker is Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa, with 22 wickets at 21.40.
Australia are the most successful side at cricket World Cups, having won five. No other side has won more than two. India won the world cup final the last time it was played in India, in 2011, and it would be a major upset for the form book if they do not win this year’s final.
