Australia vs Pakistan: preview

Pakistan pulled off the highest successful run chase in World Cup history last year, but they're going to have to top it at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. From a rampant 325-3, Australia fell to 367-9 in a remarkable first session, which also saw Shaheen Shah Afridi threaten a pair of hat-tricks.

Momentum can shift at the drop of a hat at a World Cup, and few teams illustrate the point better than Australia and Pakistan. The Aussies got off to a dreadful start but now have a base to build upon, whereas the previously high-flying Shaheens are coming off the roughest week any team has experienced at this tournament.

As if getting pasted by India at an arena that at times resembled a Roman amphitheatre more than a cricket venue wasn't harrowing enough, several members of the Pakistan team were then hit hard by a viral infection. It's been reported that Abdullah Shafique was so badly affected that he had to be quarantined, though not before Shaheen Shah Afridi, Saud Shakeel and Zaman Khan were also struck down.

It means that, all of a sudden, they're in a very vulnerable position. Australia's Adam Zampa-inspired victory over Sri Lanka on Monday, complete with some David Warner heroics, was their first of the tournament, and if they double up they'll pull level with – or potentially overtake – Pakistan in the standings.

Inconsistency has long been an aspect that's made the Shaheens' fixtures brilliant to watch from a neutral perspective, but the dreaded middle-order collapse is threatening to become a signature move. When Azam was dimissed last weekend the team went to pieces, and if there's a moment everybody needs to stand up to be counted, it's now.
