While it still had an argument for being the better option against the Google Pixel 8a, with superior cameras and a more premium build, the introduction of the Google Pixel 9a has left Google Pixel 8 in limbo. That's because, despite being almost two years old, it's rarely discounted in 2025. Consequently, the Pixel 9a is the preferable option if you're seeking a phone around the AU$800 mark given its more recent launch, brighter display and improved performance.

And, if it's affordable flagship power you're looking for, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is the easy choice. While it's out of stock at most telcos, it's can be found for less than AU$1000 from retailers like Amazon. Similarly, while Vodafone and Optus stock it, the best Google Pixel 8 plans are considerably more expensive than the best offerings on the Pixel 9a.

However, it is still a good handset – it just doesn't offer great value at its price point. If you could find it for less than AU$800 during EOFY sales, or don't mind buying a refurbished model, pairing it with one of the best SIM-only plans would make it a great purchase. Especially given its seven (six remaining) years of guaranteed software support.

However, there are still plenty of options to find and compare if a long-term contract is your preferred route. Luckily, we've done all the hard work, leaving you with just the two best Google Pixel 8 plans, accounting for different budgets and users. We've also included similar offerings on the Google Pixel 9a and Pixel 9 to help you choose, plus the best current outright Pixel 8 deals in the widget below.

Google Pixel 8: Key information

Since it's launch in late 2023, Google has continued to update the Pixel 8 with new features, and the latest Feature Drop added Google's improved Gemini Nano LLM to the Pixel 8's onboard AI features. We weren't sure the base model Pixel 8 would get all of the best AI features found on the Pixel 8 Pro, but so far Google has managed to keep the two phones in line.

The Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch screen. If that's not an issue for you, the phone's newly-named 'Actua' OLED display finally enjoys a peak refresh rate of 120Hz, even if the refresh rate isn't dynamic like the 8 Pro's, and has to be manually switched on and off as desired.

As ever, the promise of Google's Tensor chipset isn't more power, so much as more room for AI-based wizardry, which is most tangible on the Pixel 8 in the camera experience, and the powerful tools integrated into the Photo app. The Pixel 7 took great pics from its main 50MP camera, and there was already a decent level of versatility, but the refinement of the photography experience on the Pixel 8 is evident.

The 12MP ultra-wide lens of the Google Pixel 8 boasts autofocus, unlocking a macro shooting mode that, that was previously exclusive to the Pixel 7 Pro. Paired with Google's top-tier image processing, even when zooming in and despite the lack of a true telephoto lens possessed by the 8 Pro, the camera system delivers impressive versatility that most users will be more than happy with.

You also get access to powerful new corrective tools, like Best Take, which helps you collate the right combination of faces from a burst of group shots, as well as Audio Magic Eraser, which as the name implies, leans on the Tensor G3's AI smarts to iron out unwanted background noise against the wanted audio of your video's subject. These are the kinds of features that help set the Pixel experience apart from the rest, and the number of features the standard model possesses isn't anything to be sniffed at.

A surprisingly large battery and decent all-day battery life round out an impressive handset that is a predictable upgrade over the Pixel 7 – priced more affordably than Apple's and Samsung's latest baseline flagship phones– the iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S23.

No matter what you're looking for from a phone, the Google Pixel 8 has something for you – even if it's missing the telephoto lens of the 8 Pro, and is now in competition with the Google Pixel 9 is.
