Bradley's friend and counterpart Luke Donald has been gifted a psychological edge as he bids to emulate Tony Jacklin, Ben Hogan and Walter Hagen by captaining his team to back-to-back Ryder Cups. For the first time, Bradley and the USA players are being paid to play, a development that's outraged fans on both sides of the pond.
USA have, however, stuck with convention by choosing to open the tournament with alternate-shot foursomes. At each of the past five editions of the Ryder Cup, the team that won the first-day foursomes went on to claim the title. In Rome last time out, Donald broke with tradition and kicked off with foursomes rather than fourballs – and Europe romped to their first 4-0 lead in Ryder Cup history.
Donald has once again paired Jon Rahm with Tyrrell Hatton and McIlroy with Tommy Fleetwood, the duos having won two foursomes matches apiece in Rome. Despite losing both of their foursomes two years ago, Bradley has put Cantlay and Xander Schauffele together. Bryson DeChambeau, a close friend of Trump, has been entrusted with setting the tone.
Bethpage Black has a reputation as one of the toughest courses in the world, one that was forged at the 2002 US Open, where Tiger Woods was the only player to break par. Rumor has it the rough has been tamed at Team USA's request, but the rain and lightning that's being forecasted for the weekend may offset any such modifications.
Patrick Cantlay tied for 3rd on 2-under and Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy tied for 8th on 1-over at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. The Northern Irishman also tied for 10th on 2-under here at the 2009 US Open.
