Apple admits poorer call performance with iPhone 4

Steve Jobs has admitted Apple's new handsets are dropping more calls than its predecessor.

At an impromptu press conference, Apple has taken the extraordinary step to offer free cases to all users to alleviate the reception issues plaguing the iPhone 4.

However, during the course of his presentation, Jobs admitted that the iPhone 4 dropped more calls than the 3GS, albeit less than 1 per 100 more.

"This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

"Even though we think the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna... it drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. We're being transparent. So how many more does it drop than the 3GS?

Hard data

"This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one."

Still, it's odd that issue has come to light now - reviews of the iPhone 4 have shown that the device seems to drop fewer calls, so Apple coming out to say it's being 'transparent' is weird.

But given the inevitable media fallout regarding the case issue, this is probably the least of Jobs' worries, so Apple might as well mention it now.

"Less than 1 in 100 more is of no statistical significance whatsoever."

Absolutely wrong. Without knowing what the 3GS dropped call rate is it's a completely meaningless statistic. However, unless the 3GS dropped a frankly startling amount of calls, it's likely to be quite a large rise, percentage-wise.

It's a classic example of "how to lie with statistics": he says "drops less than 1 call per hundred more". People hear "drops less than 1% more" - but that's flat out wrong. If it had been 1% more he'd have said it.

1 call per 100 more is likely to be quite a large rise: if the 3GS dropped 5 calls per 100 (which still seems a lot to me), then 1 call per hundred more is a _20%_ rise. If the 3GS drops 1 call per hundred, then 1 extra call is a _100%_ rise. It only gets down into being an insignificant rise if the 3GS is dropping upwards of 15-20 calls per hundred. Surely it's not doing that.

I'm also guessing that "less than one call per hundred" actually means "pretty much one call per hundred, give or take" - do you really think he'd have gone for that number if there had been any chance he could have said "1 in 150" or "1 in 500"? I don't think so.

So a 1 call per 100 rise in dropped calls is very significant. Especially when this new antenna was hyped to result in FEWER dropped calls. It's a great big screw up.

8. I am so sad on my new 4G. I have had the 3G for several years and have been waiting until the new phones came out to upgrade. Finally got the Iphone 4 in this week, and I get no reception in my home. My 3G consistently gets 3 bars but my 4G gets zero bars to No Service signal, and I'm not holding the phone, they are laying side by side on my table. I have taken the phones all around together and consistently the 4G will get 50% less reception than my 3G. I am so sad but I feel I have to return my brand new 4G. I refuse to pay that much for a phone that requires I walk to the end of my driveway every time I get a call to prevent a drop, that is just not practical. I have had zero issues with cell reception on my 3G, so in my opinion it is definately a 4G issue, not a holding the phone issue, but a true mfg design flaw. I wish you guys the best of luck with yours. I ordered two, one for me and one for my husband, and they both are bad. My husband has the 3GS and I have the 3G, both kick the 4G's butt on reception. Hopefully they will fix the reception issue after the consumer reports confirming there is an issue, even when the phone isn't being held by the user.

7. Jobs didn't tell us how many the 3GS dropped per 100, just that the iPhone 4 dropped less than 1 in 100 more.

Apple would never give out definitive test figures on the 3GS.

6. Less than 1 in a hundred calls dropped, how many calls are made by iphone 4 as they claim to have sold 3 million and is this just in the states, as they only have AT and T data not sure how this helps those who are having the issue anywhere else in the world so kinda moot point.

5. 1 in 100 is poor in my book. They sell thousands of these things.

And conversely my HTC Desire has never dropped a call yet. Go figure.

4. @romi. In comparison to my previous phone (omnia 18910 HD) the HTC Desire does drop calls quite often.

3. It is not the only smart phone where by calls have dropped, this has been experienced on the htc desire too. Quality testing of products not thorough enough.

1. Wow, talk about desperate for any shred of a story. Less than 1 in 100 more is of no statistical significance whatsoever. To all intents and purposes it's the same as a 3GS. Why not make a big thing of how the iPhone 4 is only as likely to drop a call as any other Smartphone or is Techradar sponsored by Google?
