India vs Sri Lanka: preview
Despite racking up four defeats, Sri Lanka could still make it to the Cricket World Cup knockouts... if they win all of their remaining games and other results go their way. Unfortunately, the path to perfection begins against hosts India, who have won six out of six and will seal their place in the semi-finals with another victory at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today.
The Lions won the toss and opted to bowl first, and were swatted away by India. They've been left to chase a 358 target – which, incidentally is the same target New Zealand failed to reached yesterday. If Sri Lanka manage it, it'll go down as the highest run chase in Cricket World Cup history.
It would be fair to say that they're up against it. They've been on the receiving end of a couple of wallopings over the past few weeks, and they're realistically almost entirely reliant on Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis putting up big scores with the bat, something they were unable to do in a damaging defeat to Afghanistan earlier this week.
Mendis, who also keeps wicket, has taken on captaincy duties from injured skipper Dasun Shanaka, and it's looking like it might all be a bit much.
Jasprit Bumrah has understandably been the face of India's fearsome bowling attack throughout the tournament, but the Men in Blue's thrashing of England was undoubtedly the Mohammed Shami show. That underrated right arm removed four men for just 22 runs, and Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav did the rest.
If Sri Lanka were to pull off an upset here, things would become extremely congested at the summit. As well as the hosts, South Africa and Australia are also in the running for top spot, to the extent that one slip-up could change everything.
India team: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav
Sri Lanka team: Nissanka, Karunaratne, Mendis (c, wk), Samarawickrama, Asalanka, Mathews, Hemantha, Chameera, Theekshana, Rajitha, Madushanka
