Vodafone has announced it will be pushing out the Android 2.2 update for its Nexus One handsets.
Owners of the Google-branded handset have been waiting (some more patiently than others) for the update that those who bought the phone directly from the search giant have received.
However, Vodafone has confirmed that the update is imminent according to Android Central:
"We can confirm that Google will start to roll out the latest Android software version (2.2) for Vodafone Nexus One users over the course of the next week as an over-the-air update."
Phased
"The roll out will be phased and will be available to all Vodafone customers who have purchased the handset from us."
Amazon MP3 marketplace and Google Goggles have been removed from the Vodafone-branded ROM, but will still be available to download from the Android Marketplace.
Also, Vodafone is apparently warning that the ROM comes with open wireless functionality, meaning that users will need to disable their Nexus One acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot, or others will be able to steal their data.

6. @ caimbeul: Mobile operator providers add an extra delay but initially they're as dependent on the mobile phone manufacturers, just like the rest of us.
The Nexus One is getting Android 2.2 because Google have created a ROM for it. HTC have to first create an Desire/Legend/Wildfire etc... compatible Android 2.2 + HTC Sense ROM. Vodafone cannot exactly release something that hasn't yet been created.
Your complaint should go to HTC. Who've explained it takes time to make sure the new Android versions all play nicely with HTC Sense. Whether it needs to take as long as it did for the Hero upgrade is another matter.
Lastly the HTC Magic hasn't even officially been given Android 1.6. Android 2.1 or 2.2 is never going to happen. HTC cheekily haven't even upgraded the Tattoo (which came out after the Hero) to Android 2.1.

5. This is one of the weak points of Android phones. The carriers have too much involvement with the whole process of updates and firmware.
Like on of the previous posters, I have 2.2 + Sense running on my Desire and its great. But why the delay in getting out there.
Sold my Hero for this reason, have a strong feeling that Android 3.0 will cause the same problems.

4. I've been using FroYo on my G1 for about three weeks now. There's no Flash but that's due to it being coded for a different CPU. The joys of rooting your phone and the amazing development work done by the guys at XDA developers.

3. Now have the official voda 2.2 on my nexus one. User pressure got the quickish release. I can see a long wait for HTC customers though as HTC, Google and Vodafone will have to agree on updates.

2. At last, any word of HTC phones getting 2.2, Sense will need a tweak but we need it asap.

1. And what about the rest of us with 2.2 capable handsets? There really is no need for Vodafone to drag their heels with this. If anything they should be working hard to get 2.2 to all Android handsets capable of running it inc the HTC Magic.
Vodafone are very poor in this area - they dont even communicate time-scales or tell you when you ask them because they dont know, there is likely one person working on this. VF can kiss my loyalty goodbye come contract renewal for these unjustified delays.
