Netflix’s new Luther movie will resurrect a fan-favorite character after a six-year absence – and there’s one question I really hope it answers
Luther will return to Netflix in one of their upcoming new movies, but the titular character is not the thing I'm most excited about.
It's always great to see Idris Elba on our screens, but I was surprised to see the return of Ruth Wilson as Luther's nemesis and love interest, Alice Morgan, listed on the cast announcement.
Luther, Alice and Schenk are BACK. Idris Elba, Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson will reunite for an all new LUTHER movie. Luther has been secretly called back into service amidst a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides… pic.twitter.com/nIgLjDh7n4November 11, 2025
Long-time Luther fans will know that Alice's fate has been unknown since season 5 of the original BBC series. She did not appear in Netflix's previous movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun, either, so many of us assumed she was dead or missing.
But Netflix has thrown us a curveball, and we might finally learn what happened to Alice after a six-year wait. That's enough reason for me to keep my subscription to one of the best streaming services, if you ask me.
The second Luther movie needs to tie up some loose ends
Of course, someone appearing on a cast list does not automatically mean we'll get the answers we want. So the one question I need them to answer is simply: is Alice alive?
If the movie ends up simply showing us some flashbacks from Luther and Alice's past, without answering that huge question, I'll be disappointed. Even if the answer is no, I do think we as fans are owed an explanation about what happened to her character since she was a fan-favorite for many.
As a quick refresher, we saw her falling from some scaffolding to her apparent death during a confrontation with Luther. Although her body disappeared, leaving her true fate unknown and fans agonizing over what exactly happened there.

Alice was never mentioned in The Fallen Sun, so the next movie has a real chance to answer some burning questions, allowing us to close Alice's missing persons case for good.
Luther hasn't been the same without the dynamic between him and Alice, in my opinion, so an opportunity to see more of their complicated relationship would be an amazing thing.
I do remain hopeful that she is alive, but even if she's not, a satisfying and definite ending to her story would definitely be appreciated.
