AKotSK season 2 doesn't have a confirmed launch date yet. However, it was among many HBO shows renewed for another season last November. At the time, HBO also confirmed it'll premiere in 2027, so we aren't in for a long wait for the high fantasy series' return.

The cameras are already rolling on its next chapter, too. Speaking to The A.V. Club, showrunner Ira Parker revealed "we're already cutting scenes together", which bodes well for next year's launch.

If – and it's a big if – principal photography and post-production stage of the HBO Max program's second season are completed well before the end of 2026, I wouldn't rule out January or February 2027. Fingers crossed that'll be the case.

Is there a trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2?

No, and I'd wager that there won't be one until late 2026 at the very earliest. Once one is released, I'll add it to this section of the guide.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 cast: confirmed and rumored

Full spoilers follow for AKotSK season 1. Possible season 2 spoilers are also discussed.

Here's the confirmed cast for AKotSK season 2 so far:

  • Peter Claffey as Duncan 'Dunk' the Tall
  • Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V 'Egg' Targaryen

Right now, Dunk and Egg are the only two characters who'll return next season. That's because season 2 is based on The Sworn Sword, aka the second story in the 'Tales of Dunk and Egg' novella trilogy. That book doesn't feature individuals who appear in AKotSK's debut season or The Hedge Knight, i.e., the first entry in the aforementioned book saga. In short, the likes of Maekar and Aerion Targaryen, Lyonel Baratheon, and Raymun Fossoway won't show up.

Nevertheless, there'll be new characters to love and hate in equal measure — and, speaking to The A.V. Club, Parker has already highlighted three that viewers will want to keep an eye out for.

"The Sworn Sword... is my favorite novella in many ways, with Rohanne Webber or the Red Widow, Ser Bennis, and Ser Eustace, who are these classic characters," Parker said. "I can’t say much, but we have three absolutely brilliant actors coming in to do these roles... [but] it feels nice to see [season two] slowly come together."

While Parker is keeping mum on the actors who'll portray the aforementioned trio, Claffey has downplayed suggestions that The Witcher alumnus Henry Cavill will join the cast.

As reported by Thrones X/Twitter fan account Westerosies (see above), Claffey prevented co-star Ansell from mentioning something to do with Cavill at a recent fan convention. As rumors swirled over Cavill's potential involvement, Claffey took to Instagram to pour more cold water on said speculation.

Of course, this could be a misdirect on Claffey's part to maintain the surprise that Cavill will be part of the proceedings. I guess we'll have to wait for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 to come out to find out.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 story speculation

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which might actually be titled A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (more on why later), doesn't have a plot synopsis yet.

However, that won't stop us from discussing its story. As I mentioned earlier, it'll adapt The Sworn Sword, aka the second entry in George R.R. Martin's 'Tales of Dunk and Egg' franchise. Fans of the books, then, will already know what to expect from it.

For the rest of you, though, be aware that potential spoilers immediately follow for AKotSK season 2. So, if you don't want to know anything else, skip to the next section and/or read my spoiler-less A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 ending explained piece instead.

Let's start with the forthcoming season's name, which many expect to be called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2.

However, in one of last season's finale's scenes, Egg informs Dunk that there are actually nine kingdoms, not seven. That results in a new title card, aka A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (AKotNK), being shown before the season 1 end credits roll for the final time, which has led some to believe that this is the official title for next season.

So, will it be? Chatting to Variety, Parker teased: "That’s maybe me getting a little too jokey... People are going to have a reaction to it, and and I’m going to have a reaction to it after not seeing it for a few months. And we’ll see. I like it. Enough of the wonderful creatives that I worked with liked it, too. It came from an honest place. It’s all true. It’s nine kingdoms at that point."

The other big question on viewers' minds is: where are Dunk and Egg going? I won't spoil the locations they'll visit, but Parker has already confirmed the return of one place that Thrones fans will be familiar with. "They do go to Dorne," he admitted. "How much of that we cover, I’ll leave up to people to tune in for Season 2."

As for how many episodes there'll be, Parker confirmed to Collider that, like season 1, there'll be six chapters, with each one running between 35 and 40 minutes.

For long-time fans of Martin's literary works, that won't come as a surprise. After all, each tale is novella-length — i.e., it tells a short story involving Dunk and Egg. But, considering season 2 will follow its forebear in being as close to an authentic adaptation of its source material as possible. Parker told Collider that "we['ll] never change the story. The beginning is the beginning, the middle is the middle, and the end is the end." There won't be many, if any, creative deviations from the original plot, either.

Has HBO announced A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 3 yet?

HBO would be mad not to greenlight more seasons of their Dunk and Egg-starring TV vehicle (Image credit: Steffan Hill/HBO)

Nothing's been publicly announced, but HBO would be crazy not to renew A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for at least one more season.

Indeed, with the 'Tales of Dunk and Egg' book series' final entry – unless Martin writes another novella, which he might – being The Mystery Knight, it would make sense for a third season to be greenlit.

When you consider that AKotSK season 1 averaged nearly 13 million weekly viewers on HBO alone before its sixth and final episode aired (per Variety) on February 22/23, there's clearly an appetite for more, too.

A third and final season might not be the end of the road for Dunk and Egg, either. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker revealed that Martin has shared 12 outlines for unpublished Dunk and Egg stories with him that "take them all the way through their lives."

Elaborating further in an interview with The Wrap, Parker expressed his wish to "do four [seasons] with Egg the boy, four with Egg the Prince, and four with Egg the king – but do them every 10 years. So do a pocket, Peter and Dexter can go off, have their careers, and then in 10 years we’ll come back, and we’ll do another four of these", which would be a fun way to approach things creatively.

There's the potential, then, for many more chapters on HBO Max and many of the world's best streaming services post-season 3. And, considering Dunk and Egg have become as much firm fan favorites with casual fans as they were with Thrones devotees prior to AKotSK season 1's debut, the more seasons the better, I say.
