The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are no longer available for preorder – shipping and going live for purchase on Friday, September 19. And, between the updated camera design, upgraded chipset, improved sensors, new vapour chamber and more, both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are an upgrade worth making.

So, while it may be cheaper in the long run to pay upfront from a retailer like Amazon or The Good Guys and pair it with one of our best SIM-only plans, their AU$1,999/ AU$2,199 asking price makes a carrier plan a more palatable option for many.

Thankfully, while iPhone 17 preorder deals were likely the best time to buy, all the major telcos are vying to get you to sign up for a new iPhone – making now a great time to purchase from the likes of Vodafone and Optus. Don't worry – to make things easy, we've done the hard work to find the best iPhone 17 Pro plans for different kinds of users. You can find all the top offers below.

What's new with the iPhone 17 Pro?

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max REVIEW

(Image credit: Lance Ulanoff / Future)
  • Three rear 48MP fusion cameras
  • A19 Pro chip is the fastest on the market
  • Better battery life than ever (Pro: 33 hours | Pro Max: 39 hours)
  • Vapour chamber cooling

Likely the first change you'll notice – it's not an upgrade per se – is the new design of the Pro iPhones. Both models now have a large camera block running across their respective rear panels called the full-width camera plateau.

This is a significant departure from the square-shaped camera block in the top-left corner, which had been an expected feature on Pro models since the iPhone 11 Pro.

And it's not just aesthetics. The new-and-improved camera arrays of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max boast bigger sensors and more advanced imaging technology. Both devices feature a 48MP telephoto camera with a whopping 8x optical zoom. This is a massive improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro, which only sported 3x and 5x zoom capabilities, respectively.

Not only does this camera knock its predecessors out of the water, it also brings the iPhone 17 Pro closer to (and... maybe ahead of) what we think is the best camera phone on the market right now – the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro REVIEW

(Image credit: Lance Ulanoff / Future)

Perhaps the biggest change to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is the inclusion of vapour chamber cooling – a first for any iPhone.

This technology, which the best Android phones have had for a long time, is essentially a metal chamber filled with liquid that converts into vapour when it gets hot—drawing heat away from internal components.

Not only does this mean your hands won't get sweaty from gaming, but it's also one of the big reasons the phones boast the longest-lasting iPhone battery ever. Other factors, like the new aluminium frame, N1 modem, and more efficient chip, also contribute.

The iPhone 17 Pro features key improvements to its battery, cameras, and design (though that last one is subjective). It delivers these upgrades while keeping everything we loved about its predecessors, making it the best iPhone ever made."
