This three-match T20 series follows on from an entertainingly bizarre three-match ODI series between these sides which ended with South Africa lifting the trophy for a 2-1 series win after a match in which they lost by a record runs margin, 342, for a one-day international.

Both sides therefore will be smarting and have something to prove. This series also forms part of both teams’ build up to the T20 World Cup starting in five months’ time.

It will be last chances to see England players Harry Brook, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse this English season as they are being rested after this series. A late decision to rest Ben Duckett has brought the first call up under coach Brendon McCullum for 27-year-old all rounder Sam Curran, Player of the Tournament at the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup.

South Africa welcome back middle order hitter David Miller after he has missed South Africa’s most recent T20 series to play for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
