Motorola president resigns suddenly

Company to withdraw from mobile market?

Motorola's phones may look nice, but they might not be around much longer

Motorola's Mobile Devices president, Stu Reed, has chosen to leave the company. It's been a disappointing year for Motorola, with the iPhone easily surpassing its handsets in market share and losses becoming the norm.

After just eight months as the leader of Motorola's mobile division, Reed has watched the company's losses grow at an astounding rate. Competitors have capitalised on its inability to reduce costs and create more compelling products.

Motorola isn't so quick to (publicly) vilify Reed. In a statement, the firm attributed Reed with: "help[ing] the company generate significant cost savings by consolidating suppliers and implementing a comprehensive supply chain strategy."

Tough decisions ahead

So far, there's no word on who will take Reed's position at Motorola, but the decision will probably not be made in haste. With slumping performance and a fiercely competitive market to contend with, some are speculating that Motorola will get out of the mobile business for good.

Either way, Motorola needs to do something to right the ship. Perhaps Reed's sudden departure was the first step in doing just that.

1. Moto's Razr would have been a contender with the IPod if they had only addressed some minor complaints they started receiving as soon as they hit the market. Instead, they let the iPod (which was far from a good item when it first introduced), resolved problems as soon as they were reported. There's very little difference between the original IPod and one you would buy today, anything that you can see anyhow. Long story made short, Motorola has always felt that because you aren't an electronics engineer, you're complaints are meaningless! Uh, hello, we may not be engineers, but we are the ones who buy these pieces of crap. And, along with this scheme, Cingular/AT&T (unless it's changed in the past three months) automatically renews your contract for two years if you have ANYTHING done to your acct, like upgrade your phone because it's a piece of crap that Moto won't fix! Now, after the pres resigning, that's what I call getting what you deserve. Remember, rats don't jump a sinking ship because it's sinking, they jump because they're rats!
