Hot on the heals of the recent PSP 3000 launch, Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable yet again in 2009 with the planned release of (yep, you guessed it) the PSP-4000 model.
The news comes courtesy of unnamed games publishing sources talking to Eurogamer.net, who suggest that Sony will follow the PSP-3000 next year with another 'iterative approach'.
If so, this means that the recently rumoured PSP mark 2 might not be seen by gamers until 2010 at the very earliest.
Rumour, speculation, no comments
Sony UK, as ever, said it would not comment on rumour and speculation.
TechRadar will be bringing you more news on the future plans for the PSP from CES in glorious Las Vegas in January.

1. I hate these iterative console releases that seem to have become so common. They almost never offer enough new from one iteration to the next in order to make it worthwhile to upgrade (i.e. The PSP-2000 was hugely unlikely to convince any PSP-1000 owners to part with another £150 or so, but it may have had enough new to convince people that did not already own a PSP to finally make a purchase). On top of that, the iterative approach to console design holds back real change and innovation in a system. As games designed for the newest console iteration need to be made compatible with the older iterations. This is why we have not seen a second touchscreen added to the DS or a second analogue stick (or 'nub') added to the PSP, as any games to take advantage of the new features would either be incompatible with the older versions of the consoles or would need to take advantage of the new hardware as merely a bonus feature in the game.
