How to find the best Cyber Monday camera deals in 2019
While Black Friday is traditionally a great time to get a camera bargain, it's important to have a battleplan rather than be led purely by the discount. This is particularly crucial for interchangeable lens cameras, like mirrorless cameras and DSLRs, because in those cases you're buying into a system that might last you for years (or even a lifetime).
So how do you decide? The main differentiator between interchangeable lens cameras is their sensor size. Pro-friendly cameras like full-frame and Medium Format models tend to have larger sensors, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily better. All cameras are a compromise. What you need to decide is which compromise best suits the kind of shooting you do the most.
For example, Micro Four Thirds cameras have smaller sensors than APS-C or full-frame models, which means they can't capture as much light and are traditionally weaker in darker conditions. But the flip-side is that the cameras are much smaller, cheaper and more travel-friendly, and are also able to have fast burst rates for capturing action or sports. The smaller sensor also means some are able to include in-body image stabilization, which helps compensate in low light situations.
Generally speaking, the best interchangeable lens cameras for beginners or enthusiasts are Micro Four Thirds models, like the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III, or APS-C bodies like the Fujifilm X-T30. Both systems have the best range of lenses for their sensor size. Alternatively, if you prefer larger bodies, optical viewfinders and longer battery lives, then an entry-level DSLR like the Nikon D3500 or Canon EOS Rebel SL3/250D is a good choice.
Those models are all current, new ones, but you should also definitely consider previous generation cameras. These are the ones that will receive the biggest discounts, and often their specs and image quality will only be marginally inferior to today's latest models. The savings you make can then be put towards lenses, which usually end up being a bigger cost than the camera itself.
The Cyber Monday camera deals we expect this year
You may have already used the advice above to narrow down your choice of camera, but if you're still undecided, we're here to recommend a few specific Black Friday camera deals that we're expecting to see this year.
Most of the below cameras are previous generation models that we think offer particularly good value and will likely see bigger discounts than current models. Whatever type of camera you're looking for, here are our ones to watch during Black Friday.
Beginner mirrorless cameras
If you're looking to step up from a smartphone or compact cameras, the three we'd keep a particular look out for during Black Friday are the Fujifilm X-T20, Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II and Sony A6000. Fujifilm is running decent cashback offers on its cameras and lenses, and the X-T20 remains a fantastic learner camera. The OM-D E-M10 Mark II already has great discounts, while the Sony A6000 is due to get a $400 discount at Best Buy from November 28.
Beginner DSLR cameras
There are two to watch here: the Nikon D3500 and Canon Rebel SL2 / 200D. The former currently tops our best beginner DSLR cameras list and is likely to see some good offers with Nikon's kit lens. The Canon Rebel SL2 / 200D may have recently been replaced by the 250D, but that model isn't a huge step up and has meant its predecessor now offers excellent value. We expect to see it drop below the $500 / £500 mark with a kit lens.
Sony's RX100 series, which have been among the best premium compact cameras around for years, traditionally receive big Black Friday discounts, The sweet spot right now is either the Sony RX100 III (if you don't mind a lack of 4K video) or the Sony RX100 IV, both of which have 1-inch sensors and 24-70mm lenses. Otherwise, keep an eye out for discounts on rugged, waterproof cameras – there's already a great discount in the UK on the excellent Olympus TG-6 (see above).
GoPro may have recently announced the Hero 8 Black, but the best place to look for value is likely to be its older models. The Hero 7 Black remains in its lineup, so we'd keep an eye out for discounts on the Hero 6 Black (which still offers good quality 4K video and stabilization, albeit without HyperSmooth) and the Hero 7 White. The latter has now been discontinued, but remains a good no frills, point-and-shoot action camera. If you're asking yourself 'Should I buy the GoPro Hero 7 White?', then head to our in-depth feature on that very topic. Finally, another action camera bargain to look out for is the DJI Osmo Action, which started at a lower price than the Hero 7 Black and is likely to be reduced even further during Black Friday.
