Chelsea vs Southampton: match preview

Chelsea and Southampton embody the preposterous nature of the Premier League more closely than perhaps any other teams right now, albeit for very different reasons. Despite splurging more money on new signings this season alone than most clubs have spent in their entire existence, Chelsea are languishing in 10th place, an astonishing 20 points behind the league leaders, while bottom-of-the-table Southampton are hunting for their third permanent manager of the campaign, having shown Nathan Jones the door just three months into a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Jones' record certainly wasn't great, but he'd led the Saints to victory in four of their last nine games, a huge improvement on their previous form. The fans, however, were hostile from day one, and the embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to 10-man Wolves seven days ago gave the owners a perfect opportunity to swing the axe and score an easy win.

One of the many charges levelled at Jones was that the new manager bounce evaded him entirely, and Southampton fans are praying for a no-manager bounce to make up for it. Their trio of front-footed January signings Kamaldeen Sulemana, Carlos Alcaraz, and Paul Onuachu looked very lively last weekend, and could certainly find some joy against a Chelsea backline that has been highly suspect all season.

Romeo Lavia, who was on the scoresheet when Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1 at the start of the season, is named in the starting XI by interim coach Ruben Selles. The Spaniard, however, has left main striker Che Adams out altogether, pairing Sulemana with Onuachu instead. Stuart Armstrong is an eye-catching choice at right-back.

The Blues have taken seven points from their last seven league games, finding the net just four times. Loan signing Joao Felix notched on his return from suspension at West Ham a week ago and had another goal ruled out, though Graham Potter needs to see more from Kai Havertz and Mykhailo Mudryk. After a promising debut, the Ukrainian winger's performance levels have fallen off a cliff, while Havertz's travails are testing the patience of supporters.

Potter has a lot of personnel to rotate, and rotate he has, with the aforementioned Havertz and Mudryk paying for their poor form with their places in the team. David Datro Fofana starts in place of the German, with Mason Mount replacing the Ukrainian on the left flank. Reece James is rested, but Ben Chilwell starts at left-back.

Both teams are badly in need of three points, so follow our guide to get a Chelsea vs Southampton live stream and watch the Premier League online from anywhere.
