The definitive iPhone 4S review

Updated: Our camera team has spent some professional time with the iPhone 4S, so check out our in-depth findings of the snapper.

The iPhone 4S caught many by surprise, with Apple expected to release the iPhone 5 - but instead we got an iPhone 4 with overhauled innards.

While the masses were initially disappointed, the iPhone 4S features a glut of top-end tech that is designed to put it on a par with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S2 - but does it manage to do that?

The changes to the iPhone 4S are easy to document - the camera has been upgraded to 8MP (with an improved aperture ratio), the CPU is now the same dual-core A5 processor as seen in the iPad 2, and a seven time increase in graphical processing power.

Check out our video of the iPhone 4S in action - is it the phone for you?

Also we've got Siri, Apple's voice recognition service - will this be a game changer for mobile phones or will it be nothing more than a gimmick?

iPhone 4s review

As we've mentioned, the iPhone 4S is almost identical in outward design to the iPhone 4, which might irk those that like to show that they've got the most up to date device from Apple when out and about with friends.

However, the flip side of this is that things like the plethora of iPhone 4 covers on the market at the moment will still fit.

iPhone 4s review

Apple has slightly changed the design of the iPhone 4S somewhat though, by changing to a dual-band aerial design, making sure it doesn't encounter an embarrassing repeat of antenna-gate we had to endure with the iPhone 4.

For all those that haven't seen the older version of the phone, we'll take you on a tour of the new handset: the top of the iPhone 4S houses the power/lock button, as well as the headphone jack, plus a microphone for noise cancellation.

The right-hand side of the phone is devoid of any buttons, but holds the slot for the micro SIM card, which pops out using the included tool (or a paperclip).

iPhone 4s review

The bottom of the phone is pretty standard, with the Apple connector and dual speakers which pump out the (actually quite decent) sound.

The left-hand side of the phone sees the rounded volume keys, with the top one of these also acting as the camera shutter button to make it easy to snap with the new iPhone. We've also got the silencer switch too, which has been slightly moved upwards from the previous iteration.

iPhone 4s review

As you can see, Apple has altered its antenna band technology to move the gaps that plagued the iPhone 4's reception to a less-touchable location.

26. I agree with you on a lot of things. I love Apple, but I thing the mistake people make a lot is to think that they can use the iphone for business.

It's just not efficient enough.

Do a little experiment and see how many steps it takes before you are in a position to take down someone's phone number.

Next, see if you can add a document to an email. No. You can go to your pictures and send one at a time only.

Send a proposal to a colleague, attach a business card to an existing email string, send your location, edit an existing appointment in your calender and propose a new time. These are all things i do on a daily basis, yet the iphone cannot do these things.

It's a good phone. It revolutionised the industry, but what is REALLY different from the iphone 1? Not a massive amount. It's time to move on. Android is catching up. And Blackberry is still the best business phone out there.

23. This is another new phone which impressed me surprisingly. I don't have an I-pad or i-phone. But I heard from friends who has either an i-pad or i-phone who don't seemed all that amazed like I was! So I am presuming the superseded i-phone ain't that bad for them to upgrade urgently.

I found it incredibly solid and superbly made with practical features, one could ever need on the move.

22. I got an Apple 4S. I think they've done an excellent job with the hardware but the software isn't ready for prime time. Lots of basics seem to have been forgotten. Want to edit a text file on your MacBook Pro and move it to your phone and continue editing it? Sorry. Nope.

Apple does not provide support or any warranty of the Apps they sell. Buyer Beware is the Apple credo. They don't even warrant that the App will even load or run on the advertised device. If you don't believe me, spend a few hours with iPhone support. I've bought 2 Apps, so far, and neither works right. The Apple Tech Support has always been excellent.

I bought the tech support option with my phone and I don't think they're going to end up making a penny of profit. I've averaged more than one call per day, with another call scheduled in an hour.

Steve Jobs was great at designing an image, but I've never understood why people thought he was a big thinker. I've managed Apple products since their first Macs and have always been irritated with how limited and limiting their software is. I use a MacBook Pro, now, because Apple is hands-down better than Microsoft at software development (I used to work at Microsoft and was dumbfounded at how disorganized that company is), which is why I got the iPhone... primarily for iCloud, which I haven't tried, yet, because it requires my MacBook OS upgrade to Lion.

So far, I'd recommend people check out the Android, first. It's a lot cheaper.

With respect,

21. In my view, the most standout feature of the 4s has to be Siri. The team here at Applewrappers were quite simply blown away by it. We believed it would have a small collection of phrases but there were so many commands you can give in a variety of ways. Incredible! However, I question why it's not available as an update on iPhone 4 as sure CPU could handle it! Come on Apple! Interesting to know what other users think.

Cheers

19. I agree that Siri is a gimmick. She's not that helpful when you really need her. This is what I struggled with before buying the 4S - Should I wait until the 5 comes out? Since Siri is so "new" I figured Apple needed to work out some things and that Siri would be way more efficient in the next round. I wrote a short, silly review for a class website here: http://glennasreviews.blogspot.com/ Let me know what you think.

18. I Agree with Fuman .

Apple is making the most margin of them all ...it means they ripped me off the most. They sell me a cheap product at a high price and when I compare it, it doesn´t justify the premium price.

eg song from legalsounds are as good as from itunes for half the price

i am leaving the apple ...and as Adam..i should never have gone for it in the first place

17. no npc, no lte, no flash support = ??? Plus, I am not good with math, but somehow Apple only sold 28% of the smartphones, yet made 52% of the industry's profit. Come on Apple, I am not a lemming like most of the other people lining up to buy this phone. If you want to keep me as a customer, give us a true updated phone and you better stop price gorging us. I know I am not the only person who feels this way.

16. I'm sure it just has one speaker like every other iPhone. The left grill is a mic.

Annoying when you hold in landscape and you hand covers the speaker effectively muting the device.

Now that would be a feature I'd upgrade my iPhone4 for!

14. We've found the iPhone 4s to be a definite improvement over the 4, but by no means a game changer.

We recently had an article that stated Apple's original intent was to release a completely redesigned iPhone 5 and a 4s, but when that proved too difficult they decided to stick with just a 4s. As anticipation was extremely high, they had to sell it as a significant improvement over the iPhone 4 (Siri).

So as anyone who follows Apple is aware, the 4s is a definite improvement, but didn't do much more than improve the phone's functionality so that it is at least as good as the best Androids (by "stealing" features, of course - just like Android does too). Look for a significantly better iPhone 5 to come out next year.

13. Why did you change the original text of your verdict? Commercial or editorial pressure?

I translated your original verdict in my blog and now it's all gone. The original verdict contained the following :

If Samsung launched his future S3 with these specs, they would be pointed and laughed at. Apple knows best how to sell old features from other OS as if they were new. They can even cause a lineup for the white version of a 9 month's old phone.

I found these remarks to be funny and true.

12. @bradavon, I didn't want to go in to the specifics because as you said all the pluses & negatives of both operating systems are well know. From a personnel point of view though I don't like the stability problems I get with my sg2 it crashes a lot more than my iPhone did, and I've had numerous problems when transferring photos and music across, such as all the music art disappearing tracks with wrong titles and other info which is wrong. Photos that have been stretched and distorted, all things that I've now sorted but it was a real pain. I no kies looks a bit like itunes but it definitley aint itunes its cluncky and frustrating. Also the way some things are stored on internal memory and some on the sd card you can sometimes spend ages sorting your memory out. The apps often seem inferior to their apple counter parts and the app store in general isn't as nice to use. Also while the camara is good I found most pics and videos to be noticably worse than ones from my iPhone. I also miss not having access to iTunes which I took for granted but realise what a great service it is. But things I do prefere is the speed of the sg2 it's lightning quick the screen is amazingly colourful and clear and although it's big it's surprisingly light and well made, the widgets are quite cool and it's nice to be able to Bluetooth again!! Overall value for money it has to go to Android devices but if you judge by how easy and enjoyable they both are I would give to iPhone....for now.

11. Giving a 4.5 out of 5 is a great mark for the phone. I always feel that if you see a 5 out of 5 or a 100% mark it means no other phone, game or whatever should ever be made again. We have a pinnacle that could never be bettered therefore we should just stop. Luckily everything can be improved upon so it will never be the case.

People seem to think 4 out of 5 is a bad mark, in fact even 3 out 5 means, by simple definition, the device is above average.

I'm sticking with Android though as, although I can afford the price, I can't justify it. Frankly I think all phones are too expensive and the plans are ridiculous...

I also find the current squabbles over which is better as slightly tedious. We might as well be arguing about football. The fact is people have a choice and choose to support or purchase as they please. The fact that we still have a choice is great. Although all camps in the technology industry are trying to take that away with their stupid lawsuits and injunctions. Shame on them. Surely they get enough of our cash as it is!

I remember the days of free upgrades every 12 months and plans sitting at under £20 for a the bleeding edge of technology with unlimited calls, texts and internet.

10. I was really referring to not being able to connect a camera than expanding the memory. It wouldn't be hard to fill 32GB though.

I didn't realise you can get an "Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit" (so what I said wasn't possible below is) but Googling it and you're expected to pay £25. Those are extra things to get lost too.

I would love to know the logic in why Apple refuse to include one. I get why Flash isn't included.

Basically I was just saying Flash vs. an SD card slot. I know which I'd find more useful.

@ dunboy: Why do you prefer iPhone to Android? You've not said why. Both have plenty of pros and cons IMO. The negatives/pluses of each are well known.

9. @bradavon

Do you really need more than 32/64gb on a tablet? Personally I've only filed my 32gb twice both before long flights

As for uploading pics, I did that very thing last year on my iPad when in the US, connected digital camera or memory card to iPad and left it uploading the pics to home via Dropbox, perfect and simple to do.

8. I've had my samsung Galaxy now for three weeks after upgrading from iphone 4, and i'm sorry to say that I really miss my iphone now. Apart from a bigger screen which does make it hard to use now with one hand, everything else feels inferior to apples phone, from the hardware to the software. I'm not criticising it because it's far better value for money and is a great phone and i would say is less likely to smash if dropped although I can not verify this as fortunately I haven't dropped my SG2 yet. But it as the old adage goes you get what you pay for and in my opinion the iphone is just much more enjoyable to use. All the android fans do is point out any little faults that on paper looks like it could be an issue but anyone who has owed one knows the little things get lost when you have an amazing OS. I now feel i'm in a position for the first time to judge if android has now caught up with apple and for me they are still a fair bit behind even with apple giving them a over a year to come up with something better. I now just need to convince the wife to take on my new contract so I get the 4s but I think she's cottoned on so I'll guess I'll have to live with my choice but hey... still got ice cream sandwich to look forward to.!!
