Hosts Morocco face surprise Africa Cup of Nations 2025/26 finalists Senegal at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, with both teams out to secure their second AFCON title. Since reaching the last four of the 2022 World Cup and securing co-hosting rights for 2030, the Atlas Lions have dreamed of this moment. The legend has already been coined, the firework displays choreographed, the golden generation sworn in, but this could yet be Senegal's story.
Unlike Morocco, the Lions of Teranga have been here before. This is the third time that Senegal have reached the final in the past four editions of AFCON, and in Sadio Mane they have living, breathing, scoring AFCON heritage, Mr AFCON himself, the king of kings. The former Liverpool icon's haul of 20 goals and assists across tournaments past and present may be bettered one day, but the scale of his impact will stand the test of time.
Five years ago, Mane scored the winning penalty that secured Senegal's maiden AFCON title. On Wednesday, he secured their passage to the final. With Sunday's clash set to be his last AFCON appearance, it would make for one heck of a curtain call. The main concern for Pape Thiaw is that two of his key men, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and combative midfielder Habib Diarra, are suspended.
Walid Regragui's pragmatic approach hasn't endeared him to Moroccan fans, but it's been vindicated. They've conceded only once across six games, and managed to shut out freescoring Nigeria in midweek, thanks to Yassine Bounou's heroics in the penalty shootout. They won't be overawed, then, by Senegal's all-star attack comprising Mane, Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr.
What could keep Regragui up at night, however, is the form of Brahim Diaz. The Real Madrid man is leading the way with five goals, but if Mane is able to pin African Player of the Year Achraf Hakimi back, he'll cut off Diaz's main supply line. Ayoub El Kaabi and Ismael Saibari are the only other Morocco players to have found the net.
