This means you can watch your favorite YouTube videos or ones you've saved to watch later even when you have no internet access. If you only want the audio, check out our guide to the best free YouTube to MP3 converters and video download apps.

However, before you go any further, we should make it clear that using a third-party service in this way is in direct contravention of YouTube's terms of service – meaning doing so could lead to your Google account being suspended or even worse.

What's more, downloading videos from YouTube could be a copyright infringement; you should only do it with videos you own yourself, or that you have permission to download from the copyright holder, or that are in the public domain, and even then you may fall foul of Google's own rules above. You have been warned.

Of course there is one way to download YouTube videos legally and with no copyright issues, and that's to sign up to YouTube Premium. However, that's not free – it costs $13.99 / £12.99 / AU$13.99 per month.

If you do decide to use one of the best free YouTube downloader apps – for instance to download copyright-free videos – then they can make the process simple and quick, and we've reviewed a bunch to find you our top recommendations.

Specifications

Operating system: Windows, macOS, Linux

Reasons to buy

+
Downloads 4K and 360-degree videos.
+
Downloads from YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion and more
+
Available for Windows, macOS and Linux

Reasons to avoid

-
Limits on playlist downloads

4K Video Downloader is overall the best free YouTube downloader for quick, fuss-free YouTube downloads. It's simple to use, highly customizable, and doesn't bundle in extra software.

To grab a video (or a whole playlist, provided it's not longer than 24 videos), simply copy its URL from your web browser, click 'Paste URL,' and select an output format, quality, and location.

There's a great choice of formats – both video and audio – including MP4 and MP3. You can download captions for individual videos, and there's even support for 3D and 360-degree videos.

Delving into the properties lets you tweak options like multi-stream downloads (increasing the number of streams speeds up downloads but increases the risk of YouTube blocking your IP address) and set up a proxy connection.

You need to shell out some cash to use this tool's premium features, though, which include unlimited videos, large playlist downloads, private video downloads, and no ads. The free version is still a powerful and functional option, however – provided you don't mind a few ads.

Specifications

Operating system: Windows, macOS

Reasons to buy

+
Easy to use
+
Good format support
+
Excellent filters and effects

Reasons to avoid

-
Includes bundled extra software

At first glance, Any Video Converter Free is one of the best free YouTube downloaders out there. The only drawback is that this free version only lets you download a single video at a time. But if you're looking for a free solution, you may decide you're happy to put up with that.

There are lots of video formats to choose from, and there's even a basic video editor built into this YouTube downloader, which you can use to crop downloaded videos, add simple effects such as color adjustment, and add overlay text.

The whole process is quick and easy. Any Video Converter's interface may not be to everyone's liking, but that's nitpicking; this is a great free YouTube download in all other respects. Watch out for the bundled ByteFence and Yahoo software during installation, and you're good to go.

Reasons to buy

+
Choice of export formats
+
Clean interface

Batch downloads

Reasons to avoid

-
Video downloads limited to three minutes or less
-
Only saves videos from YouTube – not Vimeo or others

Free YouTube Download does exactly what it says on the tin. This free YouTube downloader app is simple to use and tightly focused – doing away with distractions to get the job done well. Paste in a URL from YouTube, and you can download the video in just a couple of clicks – or no clicks at all if you enable the Auto Download option.

You can download several videos at once if you need to, and you can convert them to different formats on the fly. The formats available to you will depend on the quality of the original video, but AVI, MP4, iPhone/iPod, and MKV should be available in most cases. It's also possible to convert to audio-only MP3 if you don’t need the footage.

There's only one real drawback, but it's a biggie – you can only use Free YouTube Download to grab clips that are less than three minutes long. That rules out quite a lot, including music videos and podcasts – which is a real shame.

Best free YouTube downloader app: Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to downloaded YouTube videos?

Before you use a free YouTube downloader, bear in mind that using third-party apps to download videos is against YouTube's terms of service, which say you can only stream videos directly from its servers. Since YouTube is owned by Google, this could potentially lead to your linked Google account being suspended – you've been warned.

Downloading videos is also potentially a copyright infringement unless you own the video yourself, have permission from the copyright holder, or it's in the public domain. Or, of course, you subscribe to YouTube Premium.

What's the difference between Online and YouTube download apps?

There are many sites that you can use to download YouTube videos, but we don't recommend them due to their disadvantages over desktop software. First of all, they're slower due to the limitations of the remote server and your data connection. Many such sites also feature ads of an.... unsavory variety, or display thumbnails of recently downloaded videos, which may not be appropriate.

Online video converters typically don't give you much (if any) choice about the video file either, in terms of quality or expert format. They only allow you to download a single video at a time, and you can forget about saving whole playlists. 3D and 360-degree videos are also out of the question, and very few can handle 4K.

How to download YouTube videos

Outside of YouTube Premium, the easiest way to download YouTube videos is to use one of the picks in our guide above.

Our top choice is 4K Video Downloader, and to use that you don't need to do any more than install the software on your device of choice and paste the URL of the YouTube video you want to download. It really is that simple.

That said, you should bear in mind that using a third-party download service is against YouTube's terms of service, and you should also make sure you do not violate anyone's copyright.

Can you download YouTube videos?

Yes, you can download YouTube videos – providing you use the right software, and have the right to do so.

YouTube Premium lets you download and watch the vast majority of videos on the service, for a fee of $13.99 / £12.99 / AU$13.99 per month.

Outside of that, it is possible to download YouTube videos using third-party software, the best options of which are listed on this page, but note that it will be against YouTube's terms of service, and that it could be a copyright infringement unless you have the right to download the video or it is copyright-free.

Can you download YouTube videos for offline viewing?

Yes, if you either subscribe to YouTube Premium or use one of the best free YouTube downloaders, you will be able to watch YouTube videos offline.

If you use one of the best free YouTube downloader options, you should note that it will be against YouTube's terms of service, and also that you should only use it when you have the right to do so.

That means only downloading videos that are either copyright-free, or that you yourself own, or that you have permission from the owner to download.

How to download YouTube videos from iPhone

You can download YouTube videos from iPhone by using YouTube Premium, although you will need a subscription to do so.

Free options for iOS and iPhone are harder to come by. Some do exist, but we have not tested any of them at TechRadar, so can't specifically recommend any of them.

One workaround is to use one of the best free YouTube Video downloaders, as listed above, then upload the video to your iPhone separately. Just make sure you follow the guidelines above about terms of use and copyright, though.

How to download YouTube videos on Android

There are Android apps for several of the best free YouTube video downloaders, for instance 4K Video Downloader Plus has an Android version. You should be sure to note the caveats about YouTube's Terms of service and copyright restrictions, though.

Alternative, if you sign up to a YouTube Premium subscription you will be able to download YouTube videos on Android and watch them on your device offline.

How to download a video on YouTube to my computer

If you're using YouTube Premium you will be able to download videos to your computer via your browser, whether Chrome, Edge or Opera.

If you're using third-party software such as the options listed higher up this page, you will also be able to download video to your computer simply by pasting the relevant URL into the app.

Just be aware that doing so would violate YouTube's Terms of service, and that you should only use it with video that you have the right to download from a copyright point of view.

How to download a video from YouTube on iPad

As with iPhone, the best way to download a video from YouTube on iPad is to sign up to YouTube Premium, for a fee of $13.99 / £12.99 / AU$13.99 per month.

There are free YouTube video downloaders available for iPad, but we have not tested any of them and so cannot directly recommend any of them.

How to download YouTube videos playlist

As with individual videos, you can download YouTube playlists using either YouTube Premium or one of the free options listed above.

If you're using a free version, the usual caveats about it violating YouTube's Terms of Service apply, as do those about only downloading playlists that do not have copyright restrictions on them – for instance your own videos, or those that are marked as Creative Commons.

How we tested the best free YouTube downloader apps

Our team has reviewed a range of essential content tools, including the best video editing software and the best video editing apps. Whether we're downloading video files or cutting them together, we conduct the same precise, independent testing process.
