Emily in Paris season 5 reveals its first trailer, and its taken the exact risk I wanted it to

- Netflix releases first teaser trailer for Emily in Paris season 5
- Changes series title to Emily in Rome in its closing moments
- All episodes set to drop on December 18
The first teaser trailer for Emily in Paris season 5 is here, and we've got our first taste of the blissful high life after Emily's (Lily Collins) move to Rome in the hit Netflix series.
At the end of season 4, Emily was offered a job as the head of Agence Grateau Rome, a new division of the agency that previously didn't exist. She's fallen head over heels for Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), finally leaving her will-they-won't-they romance with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and her life in Paris behind.
Season 5's first trailer shows that basically everyone else – Mindy (Ashley Park), Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julian (Samuel Arnold) – has followed Emily to Italy, begging Julian to ask the question: "If we're all here... who's in Paris?"
It's an excellent question, but one I don't want to know the answer to just yet. If you feel the same way I do about how Emily is much better suited to making a new life in Rome, the Emily in Paris season 5 trailer gives us a fantastic clue that the move might be more endgame than first thought.
Opinion: I need Emily in Paris season 5 to really be Emily in Rome season 1, and the trailer has delivered
Everything about Emily's life in Paris was annoying me – the lack of personal and professional development, the constant miscommunication between her and Gabriel, allowing herself to be overshadowed by her friends and colleagues. There's only so much of this stuff you can take, and by season 4, I had reached my limit.
When Emily first went to Rome in the second part of season 4, it was as though a light had been switched on. She seemed genuinely happier in herself, she was more assertive and sure of what she wanted. It felt as though she was trying on a pair of shoes for the first time that had ample room for her to grow into.
That's exactly what season 5's shift in location signals: growth. Obviously, you can't run away from your problems, but it looks like Netflix agrees with me when it comes to Paris giving Emily all it had to offer.

If you wait until the final seconds of the new trailer, you'll see the Emily in Paris logo scrubbed out and replaced with Emily in Rome. It's a sign that the shift in Emily's personal life is more permanent than we thought it would be, and that's music to my ears.
Even if nothing particularly dramatic happens in season 5 (and I'm sure it will), I think grounding and clarity are the right steps forward to take. Sure, the supporting cast can be in as much chaos as they like, but Emily needs something more stable in order for us to get more out of her.
However, this is a Netflix show, so I'm not going to take this moment for granted. As the full season 5 synopsis says, "just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle, until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships."
Sigh... I guess I can't have it all. In the meantime, I'm going to hope all roads lead back to Rome, even if we have to take a French detour in the process.
