The best 13-inch laptops in 2026 can deliver a fantastic mix of power and portability, without costing an exorbitant amount. With a smaller 13-inch display, you get a more compact device, perfect for putting in a bag or backpack to carry with you on the go.
There's a problem, though. We're seeing a shift by laptop makers to producing 14-inch laptops, which means there are fewer 13-inch laptops going on sale. With that in mind, I've trimmed down this buying guide to remove old models, and I'll also be adding some 14-inch laptops into the mix as well.
One of the reasons why there's a shift to 14-inch is that they offer more screen space without drastically increasing the overall size of the laptop, especially as display bezels shrink. There's also a snowball effect: as more laptop makers release 14-inch laptops, companies that supply the screens will begin to find making 14-inch screens more cost-effective.
Even so, in 2026 some of the most iconic laptops, especially Apple's MacBook Air and Microsoft's Surface Laptop lineups, continue to offer 13-inch screens. So, the best 13-inch laptops might be harder to come by, but there are still some great options that remain some of the best laptops money can buy.

The best 13-inch laptop overall
Apple's latest 13-inch MacBook Air, powered by the M4 chip, is our current pick as not only the best 13-inch laptop you can buy in 2026, but also the best laptop period. Rather than being a revolutionary reimagining of its iconic 13-inch laptop, Apple's MacBook Air 13-inch (M4) is more of a refinement, keeping the modern thin and light design, high build quality and fantastic screen that we've come to expect, while fitting it out with its latest M4 chip.
This means the MacBook Air is the perfect 13-inch laptop for people who are looking for a solid and dependable, yet also easily portable, laptop that can handle day-to-day tasks, and even more demanding ones like editing 4K videos and even playing the odd game (I personally have played Cyberpunk 2077 on my M4 MacBook Air, and was impressed considering it's not really a gaming laptop).
It also offers excellent value for money - maybe not the first thing you'd expect from an Apple device, however its starting price is seriously competitive - very few (if any) 13-inch Windows 11 laptops come close to offering a similar level of performance and design for around the same price. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, the older M3 13-inch MacBook Air remains on sale, often with big price cuts.

The best 13-inch laptop for professionals
Now onto its fourth generation, HP's Dragonfly G-series ultrabooks are lean, mean productivity machines. Geared towards busy office professionals who need a speedy laptop that's easy to take on a long commute, the Dragonfly G4 is simply one of the best laptops HP has ever made - boasting a 13th-gen Intel CPU and a gorgeous WLED display.
Unlike many compact laptops (looking at you, Apple), the HP Dragonfly G4 doesn't skimp on ports either, offering two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, one USB-A, a headphone jack, and HDMI for easily connecting a second monitor or TV without the need for a Thunderbolt adapter. With stellar overall performance in Windows and a starting weight of less than a kilogram, this is a serious businessperson's laptop - just bear in mind that it comes with an appropriately steep price tag.

The most eco-friendly 13-inch laptop
Asus has set a new standard for compact ultrabooks: one that's not only powerful and effective as a laptop, but also good for the planet. The Asus Zenbook S 13 OLED is constructed and packaged using recycled (and also recyclable) materials, meaning you don't have to feel guilty about e-waste with this laptop.
It's also just a generally strong Windows ultrabook, packing a 13th-gen Intel Core 17 CPU and an excellent 2.8K OLED display. In our review, we praised the speedy performance, incredibly thin chassis, and comfortable keyboard. It also offers a wider selection of physical ports than many of the laptops on this list, and even brings some highly competitive battery life to the table, able to go 12 to 14 hours between charges.

Best affordable 13-inch laptop
Since the launch of its M4 sibling (seen in the current top spot of this guide!), the 2024 MacBook Air remains on sale, and has become a bit cheaper. It's still a fantastic choice for anyone who wants a 13-inch MacBook at a slightly lower price, since it's cheaper than the M4 model and is now often seen on sale.
When it originally went on sale, the base specifications were a little lackluster (256GB of storage doesn't cut it these days), but if you're willing to shell out a little more to upgrade to the 16GB RAM/512GB SSD model or better, you're getting an incredible laptop with a stylish and lightweight chassis.
Of course, the signature fanless design of the MacBook Air is present and correct with this model, meaning this laptop chewed through our review testing process in total silence, and thanks to the M3's excellent thermal efficiency the Air didn't even get that warm when we tried playing games on it - something this MacBook can actually do now! The trademark Liquid Retina display looks fantastic too, whether you're gaming, watching videos, or even just browsing the web. This is basically the best value 13-inch laptop money can buy right now - so unless you're a strict Windows user (or want the very latest model), snap this MacBook up.

The 13-inch laptop with the best battery life
The Samsung Galaxy Book Pro may not be reinventing the wheel, but that’s okay. It’s a great, if somewhat unexciting, 13-inch portable that rivals the MacBook in a lot of ways. It’s not only very light and provides great day-to-day performance, but also has the kind of battery life most other laptops aspire to, making this the ideal laptop to take on the road. On top of that, it’s a fully featured machine that integrates well with Samsung devices, such as the company’s smartphones, for an Apple-like ecosystem.
