One of Apple's biggest releases this year was the MacBook Neo; the brand's cheapest laptop that just so happens to be perfect for college students, teachers, or anyone else who can get an education discount. It's not the only cheap MacBook that you should be considering, however.
For example, I've been checking out the specialist retailer Back Market's 'Ugly' section of 'pre-loved' MacBooks, and I've spotted some fantastic options.
Today's highlight is this MacBook Pro 13 M1 for just $520 - a price that just so happens to undercut the new MacBook Neo quite considerably. Even though it's an older model now, I'd still rate this MacBook Pro favorably against the Neo, considering you get an excellent M1 chipset, 16GB of RAM, and a 1600p display.
The 'Ugly' section on Back Market is home to devices that specifically have old sticker marks on them. That's the main reason why they're cheaper than the 'Non-Ugly' refurbished listings. You can also get a standard refurbished listing for $586 right now if the markings bother you, but personally, I'd be tempted to rescue the unwanted 'Ugly' duckling and add my own stickers.

If you're interested in saving even more on a refurbished MacBook at Back Market, note that you can actually trade in an old laptop for a rebate with most of the retailer's listings. You'll have to use the trade-in calculator to see how much you'll get, but it's a good option regardless.
If you're still on the fence about buying a 'pre-loved' listing from Back Market, note that it's one of the best, low-risk options on the market right now. Not only are the products refurbished and checked by professionals for things like battery health, but you get a full one-year warranty included with every MacBook. It's a much lower risk than buying a device from a second-hand auction site or such.
