BAFTA winners 2020: the full list, from 1917 to Joker

The winners of the 2020 BAFTAs have been revealed, with Sam Mendes' Great War movie 1917 taking Best Film, Outstanding British Film and Best Director. That puts it in a strong position to win Best Picture at the Oscars next Sunday.

In total, 1917 won seven BAFTAs, while Joker grabbed three, a strong result for any movie that's (vaguely) based on a comic book character. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor, as he did at the Golden Globes. It bodes well for his Oscar chances, then.

Parasite, meanwhile, which still hasn't even been released in the UK where the awards took place, won two, for Original Screenplay and film not in the English language. If you're in the UK, you can finally watch this class-focused thriller this coming Friday.

There was nothing for Netflix's The Irishman, but Laura Dern won best supporting actress for her role as a tough divorce lawyer in the streaming service's Marriage Story.

Roger Deakins, the legendary cinematographer who's previously won four BAFTAs, picked up Best Cinematography for his extraordinary work on 1917. That movie, in case you haven't seen it yet, is presented as two single, continuous shots, which gives its war-torn setting an unbeatable sense of place. Filming it must've been super tiring, so good for him.

The Oscars take place on February 9.
