Landman season 2 episode 4 proves why Monty had to die – even though Demi Moore ‘missed’ Jon Hamm while filming

"I think holding on to Cami's family isn't just about the company, it's about not losing the last vestige of Monty," my close personal friend Demi Moore tells me when we meet to discuss Landman season 2.

Three weeks later and I still can't believe that's a sentence I'm typing, but frankly, I'm just thrilled that she's getting more screentime this season. Back in season 1, Cami was fleetingly seen as the oblivious wife-turned-widow trying to do the best by her family.

If we wanted to see more of Moore, Hamm had to get out of the way. But now Cami has visited Monty's grave for the first time in Landman season 2 episode 4, we can finally see how necessary it was for Monty to die – even though Moore "missed" having Hamm on set.

Landman season 2 episode 4 is an emotional turning point for Cami

At the end of Landman season 2 episode 3, Cami was left with her biggest dilemma yet. Without getting into too much legal drama, Monty and M-Tex were haemorrhaging cash, using secret trusts to funnel money in and out of the company.

In essence, this allowed M-Tex to look like it had a healthy cash flow. In reality, it's stone-cold broke – and Cami's got some huge debts to pay back. She's got to find the money from somewhere, but season 2 episode 4 suggests we've been looking at her journey all wrong.

For the first three episodes, Cami has seemed like an overwhelmed fish out of water. But her decision-making changes, but only once she visits Monty's grave. Does this mean Monty was actually trying to protect his business from Cami, and not the other way around?

As it stands, Cami is in an emotional frenzy, and that could get ugly in future episodes. She's not placed her trust in Tommy, and now this mysterious new character Morell is another thorn in both of their sides.

I don't know what's to come, but I think we're seeing a distinct turning point in Cami's journey here.

"We do miss him, because he was so fun, but it's part of Taylor's [Sheridan] brilliance," Moore says of working with Hamm. "Who would have ever expected to have somebody like John Hamm that we then lose?

"Taylor's just so smart about keeping things surprising, unexpected, with twists and turns. As the actor, playing and being part of a show makes it always interesting and intriguing, but I think it's the same way as a viewer."
